Huge life and AD&D claim payment, now what?

How about VOLUNTEERING with a charity you feel passionate about? That is what I'd do.

Sorry to hear about your loss. We have lost several friends to drunk drivers/accidents and it is no fun

I would highly recommend two books to you:

1. Your Money or Your Life by Joe Dominguez - to help you think about the role money plays in your life and how to spend your life energy on things you value.

2. The Joy of Not Working by Ernie Zelinski - to help you think about what to do with all your free time.

Both can be found at the library or Amazon.com.

Be very careful with advisors. You are going to have to learn for yourself what is going on and rely on advisors for suggestions. I would first pay off my debts and then secure a guaranteed income and then think about investments, etc. Some people do not put your interests first.

I really don't understand how parents can hide such a legacy.

It also happened with my SIL...when her Dad died she realized what a large anount of $$ he had put away-that will be hers shortly(her Mom is ill). This man never took a trip, was always *****ing about the cost of things-the two longest conversations I had with him was him complaining that his leather slippers cost $25!!! and a set of 4 tires for his Cadillac was a whopping $100!
:p And yet he died a millionaire...pitiful and sad.

I've thought about you several times this afternoon and wanted to ask if there was anything special or important to your parents? That might be a place to find a job or to volunteer some of your time now that you might have the ability to "retire".

And as far as jobs that suck go, there are plenty of wonderful fun jobs out there. I had 2 wealthy women work for me in my store. They didn't need the money but they loved the things in my shop and they were a delight to work with! We used to have so much fun. :) I'm sure there are many jobs like that out there!

Once money is not the main goal of work many oppertunities are open to you that you may not have considered before. There are career counselors (check a local college) that can help you sort through what you might enjoy. I agree with everyone else, take your time, go slowly with any change, even leaving a job you do not like. A month from now you will be able to think more clearly. I am so sorry for your loss.
