I've lived in Dutchess County for 20 years. I've never been a "tourist", but I can give it a try.
I don't know where worm761 is, but there are no ski resorts in this area.
I'm not familiar with the B&B's, but I've read good reviews of the
Inn At The Falls. If you want a more traditional hotel, the
Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel is very nice, but, as far as Poughkeepsie is concerned, I wouldn't plan on spending anytime there. Both of these are close to Route 9, and not that far from the tourist destinations.
A lot of visitors head to Rhinebeck/Hyde Park. Most of the motels in the immediate area are "Mom & Pop" types, but there's the
Beekman Arms. This places you smack dab in the center of town.
You'll find the
Culinary Institute of America up this way. It's a good idea to get a reservation at one of their restaurants.
I don't know how far away you are. The "Hudson Valley" encompasses a large area. If you want to stay in the West Point area, the
Hotel Thayer is lovely and right on the academy's grounds. It has an excellent champagne brunch on Sundays.
I hope these suggestions help. Good luck!
