HPV Vaccine

I too am suspicious of new vaccines and am not rushing my DD's out to get this one. I made sure the youngest got chicken pox instead of getting the vaccine.

I understand your concern about vaccines.
With all due respect,
Most people do not die of chicken pox. Cervical cancer is terrible. It Can and Does kill people...... You really can not compare the two.

I will get it for my daughter next year when it has been around for over a year. I thought it was for girls only though. :confused3

they're talking about giving it to boys too because they are carriers for the virus.

"Instead, said Robert Rose, an immunologist working with Bonnez, the Rochester team tried grafting bits of foreskin collected from hospital circumcisions and infected with genital wart extract into mice lacking the ability to reject foreign tissue. The resulting cysts contained enough human virus to work with.

Ultimately, the two vaccines were the fruit of the labors of dozens of scientists. A patent battle involving the National Cancer Institute, the University of Rochester, Georgetown University and Queensland University in Australia was resolved after 13 years when Merck and Glaxo signed royalty agreements with all four."

i don't understand what this really has to do with the vaccine

Just an update - DD12 and DD18 had the first dose of this vaccine on Friday. At DD12's appointment (pediatrician's office) they collected my usual co-pay of $25.00 and said they would file with insurance and see what happened. At DD18's appointment (gynecologist's office) they collected $170.00 and said they would file and see if there was any coverage, and if so I would get a refund. I'll let you know if anything changes. I know some people were curious about insurance coverage. This would be United Healthcare, if that's your provider.

i would definitely get it if i were in the age range for it. if i had any girls they would get it also - with a doubt in my mind. cervical cancer is a horrible thing.

I believe most American male babies are voluntarily circumsized shortly after birth.

Ahh, the babies don't exactly volunteer to have parts of their genitals chopped off.

My oldest is 9. I'm glad I have a few years to see if there are significant side effects or other complications. Assuming all is well, I'll get my kids the vax when they are a bit older, probably 13 or so.

Not sure if this has been mentioned.

Farrah Fawcett was recently diagnosed with anal cancer. One of the risk factors for it is the HPV virus. I never knew this.

When my brother was being treated for his colon cancer, there was a female patient undergoing chemo and she was not very old. She had anal cancer and was not going to make it.

Maybe this is another reason to look at the vaccine.

FWIW, I'm 22, female, and am including the HPV vaccine on things I'm asking my PCP about. I'm not sexually active, but I'd rather be prepared.
I asked my PCP to-be about the HPV vaccine. She said that a)she isn't a fan of drug companies, anbd b)she thinks the HPV vaccine is overhyped. As a lot of insurance companies aren't covering it, her hospital doesn't have it yet. She said the cervical cancer risk is low enough that she wouldn't want to try an unproven vaccine. She also mentioned that my pediatrician, who referred me to her, has been really into recommending it.

As I said above, my two DDs had their first shots a couple of weeks ago. I called my insurance company to see if it was covered and they said they are covering it for people in the 9-26 age range. My insurance is HMO Blue.

My girls aged 16, 15 and 12 are scheduled to get it. The 10 year old will get it next year.

Dh is an ob/gyn, and I am a labor and delivery nurse. Neither one of us had to think about it very long. The pediatrician is also recommending it.

Our insurance at this point is NOT covering it, but we get the vaccine at cost so it wont be too expensive.

I was about to jump at the chance to get it (I'm 22) and when speaking with my mom she said "well if you aren't sleeping around having unprotected sex there is no reason to get it" :furious: So if I chose to get it does that mean that in her eyes, I am sleeping around having unprotected sex?

I will admit that I have made some poor choices in my life and thankfully none of them have had any consequences but if there is something else I can do to protect myself why not?

Besides, guys who carry HPV dont know it- they are asymptomatic.

I have had the hpv virus for over 20 years- just found out last year- no symptoms, just at a routine OB-GYN appt. It just didn't affect my cells till now. HPV can lie dormant for many, many years.
