GS is very insistent that he needs a wand while visiting Harry. I'm thinking they are pretty expensive. Does anyone know what they run and are the really worth it? Right now he's been making them out of tinkertoys...so inventive. (He also wants a cape, but that's not going to happen--I'm opting for a t-shirt)

The wands are $29.95. If you mean financially only -- no, it's not worth it. It's only a bit of plastic. However to a real Harry Potter fan, I would say yes it is! DH and I each bought one last year (and we were 24.) I don't regret it. It's such a cool thing to have.

Wow! Fast reply. Thanks. Guess if he takes care of it, it would be a good souvenir.

No, not plastic. The wands sold at WWoHP are collectors items made from resin I believe, and are rather fragile. If you buy one for a child, make sure he/she knows that it's fragile or accidents are bound to happen! Otherwise, they also sell the cheaper plastic Halloween store type souvenir wands if my memory serves me right, and those are toys.

They don't have toy ones? I'm pretty sure he's going to want to waive it over everything.

We got suckered into one as well ... It is a resin type of material .. My DS was choosen at the wand store show .. Not a huge HP fan so I dont remember the name I believe it maybe Ollivanders ? WELL anyway after he was choose and went through the show the cast member told us the wand was $30 . I was like :scared1: but DH said to get it for him and we did . It is a cool little trinket that we will always have but not really unless you are really into HP . I only liked the first few movies then I lost intrest !!

:rotfl: $30 would be a bargain for a real one!

They are about $30, and DD(8), DH, and I all agonized over picking out our perfect wands. While it clearly not going to mean much to a non-fan, it is a pretty cool souvenir for a fan.

They have 2 types of wands there, one set of wands that look like the ones the characters have in the movies. They have a Harry Potter one, a Ron one, a Bumbledore one, plus some of the teachers and villains. These come in a plain blue box with the characters name at the end.
They also have Olivander wands. These are generic type wands, but cool none the less. They have 2-3 ones for good guys and 2-3 ones for bad guys. These come in different, slightly larger boxes that look almost exactly like the boxes in the movies. They have Olivanders' on the lid and a color coded label on one end. This is the one that I got.
The two times I've been to WWOHP I saw quite a few kids, from the ages of probably 9-10 all the way up (I'm 35 and I had to have one). The kids were playing with the wands and they didn't seem that fragile, but I don't know how they will hold up when the get home and are used for "serious playing":rotfl:

Thanks. Going to print this info out so we know what we are looking at.

The generic type wands are done by birthday months based on the Celtic Calendar. The other wands are from the characters. They don't have wands from all the characters though.

Thanks again. Looked up GS and he's "Ivy." Also, noted that they all say "collectable and not intended for play."

I think the 60 bucks I paid for my two wands were worth it. I bought Sirius and bought my friend watching our house Harry. We have had duels and a great time playing Harry Potter together and we are 33 and 52. Just saying!

I like your style! :)

:thumbsup2 Awesome! I wish I had bought one for myself last month.

I bought a wand and robes for both my daughter and myself. We dress up and play all the time so they were worth every penny IMO. Anything that incourages imaginative play over tv/video games is great in my book.

It's not like they are played with like swords. You hold them, point them, and swish them as you say something.

Resin IS plastic, I believe, so yeah, $30 for a plastic wand, but my son absolutely LOVES his, and he just feels so much more like Harry Potter when he uses that (vs the hand carved real-wood wand he got at a Ren Faire, vs the tinkertoy wands he always made as well) that it was well worth it.

Now...the wand we got for my husband, that sits in its box and isn't much played with...THAT is a waste!

(FYI the robes are 99.95 and look pretty nice...DH said he would make one for DS, but hasn't taken sewing machine to cloth, so we're pretty sure we're just going to buy one... 3 years ago I made a fleece cloak for DS's Luke Skywalker costume, and he still uses that despite its problems...I can only imagine how often he's going to "be" Harry Potter in a "real" cloak/robes)

I bought a Harry and Hermione wand from, I think, costume express online. They were about 5$ a piece. They are safely packed away and they won't see them until we get to Orlando. They too seem to be made of a sort of flexible plastic/resin. They do not come packaged in a box. They come in a typical cardboard sheet with clear plastic cover (the type that could hang on a display rack). They look like a good replica to me. Perfect for an 8 and 11 year old.

I have done this for years. I will purchase some of the kids souvenirs in advance for MUCH lower prices, hide them from the kids, and then pull them out throughout the trip. They still get some spending money to pick out what they want, but this has dramatically cut down on what we spend. I do the same with T-shirts. My son has Spongebob and Harry Potter shirts ready to go.:thumbsup2
