How's the skillet at Whispering Canyon?

We have never eaten at the Whispering Canyon and are thinking of trying dinner there next May.

Our son is a fairly picky eater and doesn't like too much sauce or gravy on things. He's more of a burger, chicken, fry type 11 year old. I am hoping that they will allow him to order the burger that's on the lunch menu. Anyone done this?

We will be on the dining plan and were wondering how the skillet meal works if both my husband and I order it.

Just had it sat. You get mashed potatoes, chicken, ribs, pulled pork and smoked beef brisket. Also a half ear of corn on the cob and beans. I didnt care for the chicken, the ribs were good, though a little dry. I gave ds my corn, the beans were good and the beef was good but a little on the dry side too. My favorite was the pulled pork. I didnt get a refill. Dh finished what I had left. My ds got the adult ribs and asked them to sub french fries for the mashed potatoes and they did. So they are pretty accomodating.

We were there in September and thought it was terrible. The only thing I could bear to eat was the pulled pork and a few potatos. I did try the corn and the beans and thought them unbearable. DH proceded to try everything and ended up sick shortly after dinner--we think it was the ribs or the chicken. In any event, we found it very overrated and won't be going back any time in the future (unless we try breakfast).

It's not too bad at all, but just like any Disney restaurant, you'll have a different experience each time. I stayed at the WL one trip and have gone there for meals when staying at FW. Whispering Canyon is above average Disney fare in my opinion.

The breakfast skillet is good with all the normal offerings. The servers usually ask if there are some things you don't want and they'll bring more of what you like. The dinner skillet (never did lunch) is as described by others. If you're a true barbeque afficienado you'll find their bbq pretty average at best. Most like it and find a few of the offerings to their liking. I've had one fair meal and two good ones at dinnertime and two good breakfasts.

It's also loud and done family style in a western theme. Shy types or those looking for a quiet meal should look elsewhere. Most kids I've seen there are having a good time and enjoying the food and the laid back atmosphere.

We do like bbq! My son likes grilled meat, just without a bunch of sauce on it. I know that every restaraunt, Disney or not, is a hit and miss. Every place can have a bad day.

It's typical southern BBQ food. The corn is good. Taters are good and not out of a box. The beans have been somewhat bland and I haven't cared too much for them. I devoured the ribs. We've had it 2-3 times and I've always had good luck with the ribs. DW has had good experiences with the chicken as well. As with anything, you're going to get good experiences and bad one. We've had nothing but good ones for lunch and dinner. heck...we've had breakfast before too and it's phenominal!!!

I had the skillet about three weeks ago. The only thing I didn't care for among the meats was the chicken. Really didn't like the spicing and didn't like the texture. All of the meat, with the exception of the ribs, is "dry" barbecue. The ribs were quite good (the only thing I asked for seconds on, mainly because I was very, very full). The pulled pork was awesome, and I loved the brisket (dipping it in the spicy barbecue sauce was really great). People tend to be particular about their barbecue. I liked WCC, but I can see where some people might not like the style of barbecue they serve. BTW, the mashed potatoes were awesome, I don't eat corn (I love it, but it doesn't like me), and the beans were not something that I cared for. The salad and cornbread were also quite good.

All of the posters are right...you are going to get hit or miss at any restaurant. We didn't care for Whispering Canyon Cafe as I mentioned previously, but we like Mama Melrose and others don't. It is all a matter of personal opinion. If it is something you really want to try then you should try it and you can make your own judgement. We read the reviews with a grain of salt and then we make up our own mind. We've had good some good suggestions that turned out favorably--LeCellier, Biergarten, Liberty Tree Tavern, Plaza and some bad suggestions--WCC, Boatwright's (dinner) and H&V. It's all a matter of personal taste.

We have eaten there 2-3 times and have always liked the Canyon Skillet. I wouldn't hesitate to get it again. These are pictures from December 2005.

We just had it the day before Thanksgiving and all thought it was wonderful. It was my husbands favorite meal (and we went to Coral reef and Lecellier). I too thought it was wonderful! I am not a ribs person so I did not try them but DH said they were great. I stick with the pulles pork which was the best I had ever had! My DD ate all the Brisket! The mashed potatoes were delicious and even though I normally do not like cornbread I had two pieces YUM!!!! We were on the dining plan and this was the only place where we turned down dessert because we were so stuffed. If you like BBQ and southern food this place is the way to go!!

We get the skillet nearly every time, and always enjoy it. No, it isn't KC BBQ, but it is quite tasty nonetheless, in our opinion. The mashed potatoes are very good. I have to agree with the other posters about the beans, though - not the best I've had!

From the pics I have seen, the food looks tasty. So, if both my husband and I order the skillet (and we are on the dining plan), do they bring out one skillet or two? The pics look like there's enough food for two!

And, does anyone know if they'll allow my 12 year old son to order the burger that's on their lunch menu during the dinner hours?

They bring out 1 skillet and you share. They bring you more of anything you want. We did the lunch skillet last Dec and will not be going back. The only thing we liked on it were the ribs. The rest didn't have much taste to it.

We ate there on our last trip as a spur of the moment thing. We had a free evening, so we called Disney Dining to see what restaurants had availability. We settled on Whispering Canyon. The food was OK, and we enjoyed the atmosphere and "diversions" as well.

It was not a gourmet meal, but I think it's worth giving it a try.
