Howard Stern booted...what did he say?

4cruisin, have you ever listened to Howard Stern? I ask because I find that people that have the strongest feelings against him have never even listened to him.

Like I said, when I don't like what he is talking about I change the station.

I agree that Clear Channel can do what it pleases. I am just upset that, at least for now, no more Howard Stern for me.

Only up to the point that the company decides it isn't worth it to them anymore to keep making the program available. Clear Channel, like every other company is in business to make money. When they feel like a particular show is potentially a money loser rather than a money maker, or if they decide that a program is projecting an image with which they don't want to be associated, they have no obligation whatsoever to continue that program.

Then why pull the #1 rated show? Infinity (the company that actually owns the Howard Stern Show) has not made any comment regarding the situation because he is their cash cow. HS was a big part of what made Infinity what it is today. They took him from a 1 station, NY dj into a national presence and why? Because people listen to him so the advertisers pay higher rates for the show. If he wasn't making the company money, he (and the "shock jock" genre) would have disappeared long ago.

But it isn't the government that did this, it is a company. They have every right to determine what they will and will not broadcast on stations that they own.

Not entirely true - Clear Channel was acting because of the fines proposed by the FCC. Let's see if those fines are actually levied now. My money says no so, in effect, the FCC made the decision for Clear Channel. Yes, they have that right but it doesn't make sense - Bubba was #1 in 3 of 5 markets and Stern was #1 in 2 of the 6 markets. Me as a stockholder or advertiser, I'm not a happy camper that my listeners are going to go elsewhere. It doesn't make good fiscal sense because this is the genre that, obviously, brings in the listeners and the revenues.

As for Bubba the Love Sponge... that guy is TRASH.
Bubba is what Stern was 10 years ago. Stern (on WNBC in NY years ago) did a play-by-play of the same nature. There is (was) more to BTLS than the sex and off-color jokes. Again, my choice to listen

My kids do not listen to Howard and are not allowed to watch South Park. .

Same in my house. South Park is not appropriate for my children so they don't watch it. I made that decision because again, as their parent, it's my decision to make - but don't tell me I can't watch it because it offends you.

What I don't understand is why "Boobgate" has brought so much of this on. I understand people being upset when they were watching the Super Bowl & during the halftime show seeing the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake incident. Most of the people who were upset feel they were caught off guard & did not expect it during a "family" event like the Super Bowl. However, I don't know of anyone who listens to Howard Stern who would have been shocked by what was said. I highly doubt anyone was listening with their kids & then had to explain it to them. I listen to Stern (count me among the folks who just turn the channel when it gets too explicit/pornographic) & I have 2 kids who I don't allow to listen to it, the reason I don't allow them to listen is because I don't feel it is appropriate.

Honestly I'm more worried about the junk kids see on MTV. At least HS's show is on late night, and his radio show isn't on 24/7.

Because there was such a backlash and the majority of people were offended (not me. :) ) They are scared now. They do not want to run the risk of that big of a backlash again. Yes, the circumstances are different, but, because of the uproar, the FCC had to place new rules and guidelines.

Maybe it is overboard, but you either have to reign it in or let it be. I don't think we can have it both ways.

DHB, I think it is because this is an election year, and Bush's people think this is what America wants. I think that's why Bush is getting involved with the gay marriage debate.

I don't get it. Does this country have THAT many bible-thumping super right conservatives? I guess I tend to be a bit more on the liberal side, although I too was disgusted with the SB halftime show. My disgust is more with the "artists" who are so darned desperate for $$$$ and attention that they have to whip a boob out during a sports event.

You can have a specific channel taken off of your cable. My Dad did this with Mtv when my Brother was younger. He was offended by Beavis and Butthead. My Brother just watched it at his friends house.

Nope I'm not kidding you. Don't like it, never have never will. Do my older kids watch it? Yep. They are old enough to form their own opinions. They know why I don't like it and why I find most of the stuff offensive.

Ditto Bichon Barb!

I love Howard and as many posters have said before me sometimes I just turn the station when he's getting into a realm I don't want to hear.

We have choices people! No one is holding a gun to our heads making us listen or not listen. I for one do not want the choices taken away - especially by George "I look like the Keebler Elf" Bush!

I've been listening to Howard for a long time. Personally, I think he's hilarious and great to listen to when driving to school in the morning.

I still don't understand the big deal with MTV though. I have been watching MTV forever. My parents never had a problem with me watching it and I don't see why they would have. And, oh my, I turned out just fine!

And all this banning and laws and rulings is only making me move furthur to the left (politics wise).

I love the Howard Stern show. I'm grateful that in Cleveland he is on an infinity station and I can still hear him----for now anyway. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? This whole censorship issue is just plain ridiculous. If you don't want your kids to hear him, don't let them. You don't like what is on tv, don't watch it.

On his show this morning he announced that he couldn't even give political views anymore! Sounds a lot like a dictatorship to me. Insane.

You see IloveDMB that was my point of the MTV post. You turned out fine my kids are fine, it is all choices and perspective. I turn the channel. There are a few videos I like, but they are far and few between.
For example, I really like Kid Rock, and I love his rendition of Feel Like Making Love, and I kind of liked the the video. Then he had to ruin it by having a foursome in the planes bathroom. Sorry I just think it would have been a more powerful and meaningful video if it showed him stepping off the plane into the arms of the woman he cared about. I just think it's old. Basically the same stuff different day. Can't they make a video that doesn't involve sex or the suggestion of it? I'm sorry, but to me most of the videos are degrading to women in my opinion.
By the way I like to listen to HS on the radio, don't care for the TV show though. I have met him, he is actually a very nice person.

Can anyone say "publicity stunt?"

Soon the Stern show will be re-instated in those six markets-- in its usual format. Back by popular demand. Just you wait and see.

Oh without a doubt Howard Stern is loving the publicity. Heck his face was plastered all over the news yesterday. He LOVES that.

As for me, I am writing a letter to Clear Channel in San Antonio (where its headquarters is) and I am explaining that I border on being on the Religious Right, but that I enjoy Howard Stern and I can exercise my right to change the station when I feel what he is talking about is inappropriate.

Clear Channel is running scared right now as the CEO is appearing before a Senate Subcommittee. It is not a coincidence that Stern was pulled while the hearings are going on. CC is sucking up the FCC.
