I'm planning my Labor Day trip for our 1st family trip to NYC.

Have you stayed here? I can get a rate of $111. p/night for Sept.4-6, 2004.

It is located on 8th & 51st street. Suppose to be midtown manhattan within walking distance to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, etc..

I'm not so concerned with quality as I am a safe location.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Well, I'm not an expert. Times square has gotten safer in the last few years. But if it were me, I'd take a cab to/from the hotel after dark. I don't know what kind of security that hotel has. I just find that area of town a bit "creepy". But, that's just me.

I know there are some NYC residents here, they can probably give you better info.

It's perfectly safe and very convenient. You're in the theater district, about 1/2 a block from the Gershwin theater, about a block from Ellen's Stardust Diner. I wouldn't hesitate to walk around that area in the evening.

Very good kicking off point for all of mid-town. Don't know anything about the rooms, but the location should be great.

Kimberle - I know what you mean...I wanted to make sure this wasn't the dumpiest part of the city in some back alley or something ;)

Arrabella & Credit Man - thank you, I'm happy to hear this would be a good choice location wise when walking.

We want to see EVERYTHING (yeah right, but we'll try :D )

Do you know also, where do we go to hire the carriage rides thru Central Park? Approx. how much should I budget for that??

Thanks again.

51st street and 8th Avenue is a safe location, but that hotel is a DIVE!!! I used to work at 51st and Broadway (a block away) and that place is awful. I used to walk by it often on the way to the Post Office, and it really isn't a nice place. I'd find somewhere else to say.

jel0511 - that's what I was afraid of. HoJo's doesn't have a good reputation anywhere anymore :( Thanks for telling me.

NYC tourist info

If you're in New York for some romance, you can't pass up a hansom cab ride.

These fairy tale chauffeurs line up across from the Plaza Hotel at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue.

prices:
$35 for the first 20 minutes, $10 each additional 15 minutes

hours:
Sun-Thu 11am to midnight; Fri-Sat 11am to 1am

I stayed at that Hojo's a couple of years ago, and thought it was fine. I'm used to staying in really nice places, so this one was a bit of a step down for me, but I didn't have any problems there. My room was clean and comfortable. It had a queen sized bed and a pull out couch. They had security looking at room keys as you walked in after 11:00 at night. It's not the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in, but it was adequate.

TLinden - I guess adequate is what I'm looking for. I know I can't expect luxury accomodations at these places. Thanks for replying.

AAA usually has ratings for hotels and motels, tells you what to expect. Since you've gotten two very different views on the hotel in question, maybe you should check it out through AAA.
