My DD has to represent Harriet Tubman in her elementary schools wax museum. She is a skinny white ten year old. What would you do? I was thinking a long full skirt with a white apron and white cap??????? I cannot sew for beans!
any ideas?

Please, do not depict her like you mentioned. She was an emanicpator for women and negro rights/freedom. Hope you can modify your daughter's costume. I did see a similar photo where she was wearing a handkerchief on her head. Here's that pic

oh, does your daughter have simple black shoes and black tights?

Too funny. I (well DD) had to make a Harriet Tubman in paper doll like form to go with her report on Harriet Tubman. I was doing it at 5:30 Thursday morning. Nothing like last minute. DD had missed a day of school when they got the paper on this part of the project, and it was never given to her. Nothing like winging it!

I cut a dress out of an old shirt fashioned very much like the dress in post 2.

Run to your local goodwill store - you should be able to find something there -that's where we found stuff for our dd - or if you have an old dress she can wear -just pin it in the back to fit her better....

WE just had our wax museum a few weeks ago - our Harriet Tubman just wore her hair in french braids & wore a long, floral dress..

let us know what grade you/she got.:)

Thank you for all the suggestions. I read the book on her with my DD and was very impressed with her life. I had not known in advance how much work she did after the civil war was over. I only suggested the apron and cap because there was a picture of her wearing one in the book. However, it was probably from an earlier period of her life. I am going to try to get an old fashioned looking dress with some simple black shoes. Hopefully that will look okay.

thanks again everyone.

LOL. I just had to say that your post reminded me of my OM team. One year we did a play in the "Oh My Fair Shakespeare" division. We decided to do the underground railroad and Macbeth. You had to have I think it was 10 lines from a Shakespeare play. We did the witches when they were doing that eye of newt thing. I was one of the witches. One of the other girls on my team was Harriet Tubman. She was exactly like your daughter...a skinny, blonde white girl. LOL. She wore a long dress with long sleeves, a white shawl, and a head scarf. Good times, good times.
