How would you handle this if it happened to your kid?

My comment was that he was an only child and that he has his parents wrapped around his finger. I simply meant that with him being their only child, these particular parents have centered their entire universe upon him and what he wants to do. I'm sorry if it sounded as if I meant otherwise.

I'm sure you didn't mean it the way it sounded to me, but it's a pretty sore spot as I see these kinds of comments all the time. AS the parent of an only, who is more spoiled than some kids but less than others, I can tell you that the kind of parents who behave as you describe will do so whether they have 1 kid or 10.

OK- The mom calls you after being late to begin with, to reconfirm that she IS bringing him over as soon as she can "find him". Then she never does. This is no longer the child breaking a committment, but the mother. I would be sure to kindly let her know. "Yes, after you called, he kept watching. I wish you had called to let me know your plans had changed. I understand that things come up, but my son could have changed his plans as well if he had only known. In the future, could you please let me know when you need to change your plans?"

This is so familiar - my DS had the same type of friend with the the same style of parents - I can't count how many times he got a better offer - only most of the time they never bothered to call.

It took a few years and many disappointments but it's been a long LONG time since my DS has requested to invite this friend over. Any time he did we would remind him that no matter what "T" says, remember, odd's are he won't show up.

Luckily by this year/Grade 4, he's gotten closer to other friends who have been brought up with better "Friendship" skills.

Interesting follow-up:

After school today, Ben says that he asked the boy "Why didn't you come to my house yesterday?" "John" replied that he had gotten sick and that's why he didn't come. When I asked Ben what his response to that was, he said, "I told him, 'Yeah, right. '" I thought that was pretty good.

Thanks again, guys!
