So.....I will apologize in advance for not being able to conceptualize the seemingly simplest of points usage. DH says I birthed out a little of my brain with each child and I actually agree.

I am booking a trip for October 2012. I will need a lot of points and need to borrow.

I will have some banked points as well. My UY is December but need to book this November. I know I'll be able to use my banked points and borrow the points I'll receive Dec 1. But I need more points.

Here's my question:

I'm booking a 2 brd at SSR for 7 nights and a THV for 5 nights. There is a possibility that we'll try to change resorts for the THV segment of the trip at the 7 mo mark but not sure yet.

Because I'll have to borrow points to make most of the reservation as I don't get my new points until Dec, should I chance getting the THV after the 11 mo mark? The SSR part of the trip is solid and I'm thinking that getting a 2 brd at SSR won't be an issue at the 10 mo mark but the THV might not be available at 10 months. I know that if I borrow, I won't be able to cancel the THV but can I change resorts?

First, let me see if I'm understanding correctly. You want to book a trip for Oct 2012. And it sounds like you will be banking some 2010 points into your 2011 UY. Is this correct?

If so, keep in mind that when you book never figures into borrowing or banking. The only requirement is that you have points available to use for the time of the intended stay. For an Oct 2012 stay with a Dec UY you could book with banked 2010 UY points, current 2011 UY points or borrow 2012 UY points.

My initial impression is that you don't have a problem.

If what you are thinking of booking at the 7 month mark (in March 2012) is fewer points than the THV requires, then I would think you could have MS make all the points the expire the soonest apply to the first part of the trip and then you could bank some of your Dec 2011 UY points into Dec 2012 UY by July 31 if needed.

We just bought a Dec resale with 40 2009 points banked to the 2010 UY. I thought I was going to have to do something creative to use the points, but when I called MS, they just applied those 40 points to our Oct 2011 trip and moved 40 points back into our Dec 2010 UY so we could then bank those points. I would think that the same thing could be done in your situation, if you wind up with excess points.

You always have the answer! :flower3:

as stated, if you own at SSR you should have no problem booking SSR/THV by calling in november to book october 2012.

the down side of traveling late in your UY comes if you decide you need to cancel: all banked and borrowed pts will stay in your 2011 UY and expire on nov 30, 2012.

a dec UY means your banking window closes july 31, 2012, so if you have to cancel your oct reservation after that, your current year pts will also be stuck in that UY and need to be used before nov 30 or they will expire. but if you cancel part of the reservation prior to july 31, you would be able to bank forward the recovered current year points.

most likely you won't need to cancel, but be aware that if something comes up, you'll need to do some quick thinking to rent that reservation as rebooking something else may be difficult.

(sorry to be a downer...)

We won't need to cancel the trip- it's my middle DD's bat mitzvah gift but understand I can't predict life. :goodvibes Thanks for the insights. I appreciate it. :thumbsup2
