How would I find out about possible hurricanes?

If there is a hurricane that may hit Florida, how early would I be able to find out about this?
Last year we lost three days of our trip, stuck in London because of Hurricane Frances, but we only knew about this a couple of days before we left (I guess because I'm in the UK and we don't get news like that until the hurricane is actually nearby).
We are two weeks from departing for Orlando (3 weeks till out cruise!) and I wondered where I could look for early hurricane warnings, and how early they would appear.

Thanks!

I like www.wunderground.com they have a link for hurricanes/tropical storms and the will show anything brewing as well as it's projected path, as soon as it is a declared a tropical depression. This is usually about a week or so before it hits anywhere.

You can track the hurricane from the UK no problems by going to the various websites that the others have listed. I espcially use the website that mike2beach quoted. We were in London from 7/7/05 through 7/11/05 prior to our cruise and knew that a hurricane was coming our way. I tracked the hurricane daily to see if it would hit our area and had no problems getting information.

As far as timing goes, you'll only be able to track them once they're a tropical depression. The one we're watching now that's heading this way as a tropical storm wasn't put on any of the websites until either late last night or early this am. It really depends on where the storm forms as to how long we're able to track it.

I would simply check out the website mentioned and post questions here. I'm always watching things since we live in Florida and will be happy to keep you up to date!

Just wanting to subscribe...thanks for all the great websites! We are cruising at the "end" of hurricane season so I wanted to have all these links to check in a couple of months.

Thanks everyone! I made a similar thread a little while ago before I saw this one. I posted on my own thread that I know I can't change things...but it just feels better to be able to track things as they happen and try to work around any such events.

How long is Hurricane season. We dont go on the Wonder till 10-27 to 10-30 and I was assured by our agent that Hurricane season is over by then.. is that correct?

Hurricane season occurs from June 1 to November 30, sharply peaking from from late August through September.

Technically speaking, your agent is wrong, in that "hurricane season" doesn't officially end until November 30. Practically speaking, however, the chances of a named storm in the Caribbean in October/November is relatively low. from around 14% in October to around 4% for November (peak season is mid-September). There's a lot of information on this and other issues relating to hurricane probability, etc., at wunderground.com

I think it depends what you consider an "early" Hurricane warning to be.
Generally speaking, we're talking a day or so at most advance notice, and even then, Hurricanes have minds of their own.

I recall reading somewhere that there has been a named hurricane or tropical storm in every month except January.

It is best to look at the sites that everyone has listed above before you leave, but also be aware that the storm paths can change hourly. We here in Florida don't always know when a hurricane is going to hit. Sometimes they tell us a week in advance that a hurricane is going to hit and it doesn's hit at all. Sometimes they tell us that the hurricane will not hit us and then the hurricane wobbles a bit and ends up hitting us.

For example, yesterday they told us that the latest system, Katrina, was going to be a tropical storm and hit south Florida. Today, they changed the forcast and said that it will be a hurricane. The hurricane center keeps changing their minds.

Last year Charlie was supposed to Tampa, where I was living at the time, straight on, but a couple of hours before the predicted landfall, it turned right and hit Ft Myers. I was told later by a neighbor that Tampa only got a few scattered sprinkles.

If you look in my signature you will always see the projected path of any tropical system that looks like it is heading to Florida. The picture automatically updates every few hours when the hurricane center does their advisories.

Keep um coming! I'd rather track this thread than a hurricane. We're cruising 9-1 for 3 days
