How were you proposed to?

I had won a free night's stay at a hotel about 45 minutes away thru work. DH and I were living together at the time, and we lived in a small town (8,000 people). So the trip to the "big" city was a big deal!! We (I) planned a day of shopping, a nice evening out for dinner, the night at the hotel, then brunch Sunday am. DH even asked me if we wanted to meet up with 2 couples we were friends with for dinner. My response, "No, it would be nice to just have dinner together ourselves this time."

We finished our shopping that day, then checked into the hotel. DH decided he needed a nap, so he crashed. I decided to take a shower and get ready for dinner. I finally wake him up, and he gets ready for dinner. We are just about to walk out of the hotel room when DH asks me if I have everything. My back is to him as I say yes. He asks again if I am sure that I have everything. In a fit of pique, I turn around and say, "Yes, what am I missing?"

Then my eyes actually focus in the ring in his hand, and he says, "How about this?" Not sure that he really asked me to marry him or that I really said yes, but I do remember strangling him in a hug (and kisses). Six months later (and almost 10 years ago), we got married.

Basically, I did all of the ground work unknowingly, but the proposal worked!

We thought we would have to get married to allow me to live in Canada with Chris so it went something like...

Well, I was going to marry you anyway so we might as well just do it now.

My DH is not a "flowers and candy" kind of guy, but I loved the way he popped the question!

We had picked out a ring, and knew we were going to get engaged. Well, DH had the ring on layaway, and told me not to expect it for quite a while (he was just starting his career, and was very strapped for cash at the time). So I wasn't expecting the ring for a long time.

Christmas was a month away, and DH secretly paid for the ring. On Christmas, he handed me two gifts and warned me that they wouldn't be big or expensive. I was okay with that, but one of the boxes seemed awfully large to not be anything big or expensive! He had wrapped the ring box in larger and larger boxes, until the last box was the size of a med. packing box. I finally got to the ring, and cried! He looked so happy as I stared at it!

Then I told him that he needed to ASK before assuming I'd marry him- he quickly got down on his knee, and asked, "So, will you?". Of course, I said YES!!!

Thirteen years later, I still say yes. ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

Gael invited me to a family picnic their family always had. It's all the relation, so it's like 100 family members - it's huge. And of couse, I had met like none of them, except really immediate family.

I found out they do a 'white elephant' gift exchange (where you wrap a crappy/weird gift and give that instead of a really nice present). They would play musical hot potato(e) with a stuffed white elephant and whoever was holding it when the music stopped had to get a present and open it in front of everyone.

I had talked with her parents ahead of time (to tell them I intended on asking her) and brought along my own 'special' wrapped gift that mom (who was in charge of handing out the gifts) would give to Gael when it was her turn.

Did I tell you this was in front of a bunch of people I didn't really know yet? :D So, Gael gets her gift and starts opening it - my palms started sweating. :) She sees that it's a ring box and thinks it's a present from an Aunt who really doesn't get the 'weird gift' thing, so presents from her could be anything. So she's ready to pretend she likes it and when she opens it's up, it's her ring. (She figures it out and starts to say "oh no, oh no" and I start sweating a lot more) I get down on bended knee and pop the question. She did say yes, when she was done being shocked. We'll be married 9 years on August 12. :D

I guess my proposal is very appropriate for this board!

DH proposed to me during MVMCP in '98. He placed the ring on one of those light-up roses they sell on Main St. at night. He gave me the rose on the walkway between the hub and Cosmic Rays - with the castle in the background.

We got married 11 months later on the beach at the GF.

What could be more perfect for two self-proclaimed disney "freaks?" :teeth:

On bended knee, in a cafe in Paris, close to where I worked when we lived there. All of the waiters in the cafe were in on the proposal -- I had no idea it was coming and was sooooo shocked it took me about 10 minutes to come out of the fog I was in and say yes. ::yes::

I had known Mike for less than 5 months. We took a vacation to Aruba.
On May 10th ;) we were sitting out on the beach, looking over the ocean with a full moon out. We were in one of the long lounge chairs where I was sitting leaning back into him.
Out of the blue he told me he loved me and asked would I marry him. I hesitated because I wasn't sure if he really asked me or if I was imagining it  Then he sorta nudge me and quietly siad "well", and I said YES!!! I was sooo excited but I had no one to share the news with! We were married in December and it will be 17 years this year!

My Fiance would travel M-F for his job. He left one morning for Philly and I didn't expect him back until Friday. I got home from work and found a card on the kitchen table. I opened the card and it was from my finace saying how he was so sorry he had to travel so much but he left me a gift in my closet. I go up to the bedroom, open the closet and there is my fiance on his knee with the ring. I was so close to having a heart attack from seeing him in the closet bc I thought he was in Philly! He scared me to death! Once I got over the inital shock though I thought it was pretty creative!

We were out for my birthday when Alan decided it would be nice to walk the lakefront. As we were by Buckingham Fountain, he said he wanted his picture taken and hands me a camera case. I walk back several yards, unzip the camera case and there is a ring box!

He shouts his proposal and I say yes.

I was completely surprised - we had never discussed marriage.

We will celebrate our 8 year anniversary next month.

Pete and I met at university which is located near some beautiful English countryside (our university was a 17th centuary mansion set in 500 acrea of country park with 2 lakes!) One day we went for a drive in the countryside along the moors. We decided to go for a walk and Pete got down on one knee and proposed. We have been together for 20 years now and maried for 6.

It wasn't a big "scene", since no one was paying attention to us, but it was in public.

DH had recently started at his present job so it was our first time at his company's holiday party, which is a HUGE formal event. We were wandering around for quite a while eating and drinking and finally settled in a corner of a room. After sitting for a while, DH dropped on one knee and proposed. Of course, I said yes. He then pulled out his cell phone so I could call my parents. Turns out, he had asked my parents for their permission ahead of time.

I had been wondering all night why no one wanted to stop and talk to us - I thought DH had no friends at work! I knew something was fishy because he's a very friendly person. It seems that everyone wanted to wait until AFTER he proposed, but he waited until the party was halfway over. :teeth:

DH and I got together in 9th grade and I moved away after that year. We lost touch but I visited again after HS graduated and we started up our romance while I was in college. My sophomore year, DH, who is a carpenter, cut his thumb at work and had time off to recouperate so he came to visit me at school. We spent a lot of time looking at rings during that visit. I picked out some I liked but he said he would have to wait for a while to afford it.

Actually, while I was in class and he was supposed to be running an errand for my dad, he bought the ring. He didn't have enough money with him so he arranged to use several credit cards to pay for it. He also aked my old roommate if he could have some money wired to her room because he wanted to buy me a gift.

So, after he went home, my old roommate asked me if he had bought me a gift. I knew right then and there he had bought me the ring. Apparently I had been sleeping right next to it for several nights.

So a month later, when he and his family picked me up for our long-planned to Disney World, I figured I was getting a ring. When we arrived at the Magic Kingdom, I used every opportunity I could think of to look through his fanny pack to search for the ring. I never found it. He must have stopped at every bathroom we passed because he was so nervous.

I was going from attraction to attraction because I didn't want to miss anything. Finally at around Noon he was able to get me to sit down and drink a rootbeer float. We were sitting on the wall near some flowers in front of Cinderella's castle (the Walt statue is there now, only flowers in 1990). He went to throw away the float cups and came back, sat next to me, and proposed. Even though I knew it was coming, I was shocked. He put the ring on my finger and we hugged and kissed. Then he had to ask me again because I never said yes.

We turned around and saw that someone had videotaped the whole thing. I don't know why we didn't ask for a copy. I wonder if that was a DIS'er.

We have been married for 12 years. Happy memories. Thanks for lettitng me share them.

Well, there are certain places you shouldn't propose to your SO at. BECAUSE, someday people are going to ask you, and you will have to tell them it's something you can't share. So, with that said, I can't share.

But we wanna know. ;)

I'll give you three guesses where we were when he proposed. I've been married to the guy for ten years. I love him to death, but romance is not his thing. He didn't stop to think that when our children are old they will want to know... Not sure if I'll ever tell them. It's kind of embarrassing.

Um...if it's where I think it was, wasn't that a "Will & Grace" episode with Woody Harrelson?

We were on a moonlit cruise on a private yacht, and we had just finished a romantic dinner. He proposed right before dessert. :D

DB and I talked about getting married and had even picked a date after we had been dating about 7 months. He was looking buying a house, but I essentially had done most of the looking, since there was the understanding we were getting married. However, I still didn't have a ring and was not going to do anything until I got one!!! We took a trip to the Bahamas and I had told my friends if I didn't come back w/ a ring DB and I were going to have a talk! Well, one night we took a party cruise and then went and gambled, getting free drinks in both places. Needless to say, we were both feeling pretty good going back to our hotel! (We were so drunk, we even got lost! ) Anyway, on the way back DB finally took the ring out of his pocket and proposed! I of course said yes. Then we went back to the room, got sick and passed out! The next night we were crusing back to FL and were on the ship in a pretty secluded area, under the moonlight, and DB asked for the ring back! I said "no way!" He explained that 1, he wanted to ask me when we were both sober, to make sure we both meant it, and 2, he wanted to have a story we could tell our parents, etc. instead of saying we were both wasted!! LOL!

He had also asked my parents permission first!

On the way home from our trip, he asked where I wanted to go on our honeymoon. I said gosh, I don't know, hadn't thought about it yet, and then he said "what about Disney?" I was like "OMG! YES!!!!"

And then, 4 months later, we were married, on the way to DW for my first time and still together almost 11 years and 5 Disney trips later!:sunny:

I'm getting some good ideas of what to do and what not to do from reading this thread.

DH and I started dating in 1994 while we were both in high school (he was a senior and I was a soph.). We went to different colleges and ended up breaking up for a few months after my freshman year of college, but DH eventually came to his senses. ;) In 1998 he moved down here with me. We moved in together shortly afterwards and in December 1998 he proposed.

I was still in college at the time, so I worked nights at a local restaurant. When I left for work, I told DH "Have fun buying my ring"...don't know what made me say that! LOL! So I get home from work, and DH tells me that he bought a star for our christmas tree (We had a small, tabletop tree). I was so confused because DH isn't really into decorating, so I could only imagine what kind of awful star he bought for the tree, especially since I already had a nice, pretty bow on top. When I walked over to the tree, my engagement ring was on top. :) I was in shock! Even though DH and I had been together for so long and always talked about getting married and honeymooning in WDW, I was still in shock! I think I may have even slapped him...saying that he better not be lying because that was mean! LOL!

We got married on June 2, 2000 and spent a week at the GF for our honeymoon.
