How were kids seated at Graduation? updated post #86

alphabetically, but it was arranged so that the val and sal were easily able to exit/enter the row to do their speeches.

What a stupid fit to throw!!!

Graduation in Canada typically is equivalent to the ubiquitous American prom. It is a huge event; tuxes, gowns, limos, dinner dance and the whole nine yards. It's very common in our school districts to hold it about a month before the end of the school year so as not to allow the distraction to interfere with final exams. Our graduates must also write Provincial (government) diploma exams and the results are not available for many weeks afterwards. I imagine that there's a good number of on-the-bubble kids who participate in Grad that don't end up actually getting diplomas.

That may be more an Alberta thing than a Canadian thing - or maybe Nova Scotians are the odd ones, but graduations here are always done in very late June after all exams are completed. Prom is held with in a week or so of graduation. NS doesn't have separate provincial exams.

When I graduated, girls wore white and boys wore green gowns. We sat and were awarded our diplomas alphabetically by tier - those with highest distinction first, them distinction, then merit then ordinary graduates. There were a little over 200 of us. Then anyone who was getting a scholarship was called up to receive it. My dad was a guidance councilor - they, the grade 12 teachers and the administrators met and went over every student to ensure they were eligible to graduate before publishing the list a few days before graduation. And that was in the dark ages with no computers to help....

At my daughter's much bigger high school (~450), everyone files in and graduates in alphabetical order. They each have the file card with their future plans and scholarship information as well as honour status and any extra certifications (IB diploma, bilingual certificate, Cisco certificate.) There are about 20 awards/scholarships presented as well.

When I graduated it was ABC. When my kids graduated, they picked seats at practice, so they could be by friends.

They all wear one color at our school- everyone wears blue---just as well since we have a couple transgender kids and I am sure the school would make a issue out of what color the are supposed to wear.

If I remember correctly, for my DD's it was valedictorian, salutatorian, top 10, executive board, student council NHS and then alphabetically after that. That's the order they graduate in also.

Students who have placed highest in their class should be recognized accordingly.......and my DD's were not in the top 10, but they were in NHS and/or on the executive board.

Well what comes around really does go around....The mother that threw a fit about her daughter not being in the front row got her wish. Graduation was yesterday and her daughter was in the front row, and ended up behind the table stacked with diplomas. From where her mother and father had chose to sit, they could see anything but the top of her head.

Be careful what you wish for people!

Top ten up on stage facing the audience. Everyone else alpha.

DS was number nine. It was nice to have him on stage being honored but if the district decided to change it his year, while I may have been disappointed, it would not be something I would throw a fit over. His accomplishments are there no matter where he sits.

Well, there you go!

DS graduated last year. Class of 400. They sat alphabetically. They announced their names only, no special distinction. The program listed those with 4.0, those in NHS, and those graduating with Honors.

Top 10 in front row, rest alphabetical. What we all had to chuckle about at ds's graduation was that the kid who got the perfect score on ACT was in the regular audience!

My ds's school was seated alphabetically. My son was the very last in the alphabet out of 750 graduates. Longest night of my life. He's still waiting to walk the stage. ;)

We only have one transgender, and he (used to be she) is just treated like any other boy, uses the boys restroom and locker room, and the boy gown color.

Our graduation was done by height (but it got messed up), with the choir kids sitting close together, and the band kids sitting close together. In the front were the top 2, and the student council officers.

The girls wore red and the guys wore black at my graduation.

Our seating was based on walking partners. Everyone picked who they wanted to walk with and signed up and then it was submitted in a list about a month before graduation. That list was then compiled and anyone without a walking partner was then assigned one. The seating order depended on when you signed up. Although anyone giving speeches (co-class presidents) were sat in the front row.
