How upset would you be?

We are a large party but the other half arrives today so it was just us & our kids last night.

We are staying at Bahama Bay by Wyndam Vacation Rentals.

We had our dinner in the oven last night and I called to inform the front desk that neither shower had hot water. I told them to please come up and fix it tomorrow as we were getting ready to turn in.

Minutes later, everything goes black. The power to the entire resort shuts off. The kids are terrified. No light anywhere in the room. The emergency light in our Villa didn't function.

I went down to the front desk because the line was busy.

No lights there either. Only lights on are on outside hallways.

I greeted the guest services very friendly because I knew they were having a rough night, but we had just driven down from PA and were looking forward to a relaxing evening.

I confirmed when the power was to be back on (an hour) and that there was a flashlight in the utensil drawer (which we then discovered didn't have batteries). I then told them about, how I knew that they didn't cause if, but I had to feed the kids granola bars for dinner because it was late (power had been off for about an hour at this point) and our dinner had been in the oven. I also reiterated the hot water issue and stressed that I paid a decent amount of money for this room. Another representative interrupted and said, "The power is off in a 5 mile radius. We can't control the power." And I said, "Well neither can we." Should I expect some kind of compensation for our troubles?

Now it's a new day and we only have one more night here before we check into AKL. So I'm going to get ready and enjoy the parks!!!

I would be frustrated as much as you are. That must have been super stressful! That being said, I don't believe you should be compensated for a power outage. That's just one of those things that can happen that we don't necessarily anticipate but it's not really anyone's fault. I hope today goes much better and your kids learned a valuable lesson that adversity can happen to anyone at anytime and attitude is everything. Just model letting this go and moving on with a great vacation in a positive mood. Have a great time!

I wouldn't expect compensation for a couple of hours of a power outage. You knew it wasn't their fault but yet you complained to them about your dinner being ruined. It sounds like you were hoping they would offer compensation, but they didn't.

I'd be more concerned about having no hot water though. I hope that issue gets fixed for you today.

Download an LED flashlight app for all your smartphones, when the power is out, just reach for your phone. It will at least help in an emergency.
Also, those battery backup USB chargers are great to have for your phone, especially when you are out for the whole day in the parks and your smartphone gets low on battery.

I'm not sure the troubles that you want the hotel to compensate you for.

The power outage was not due to Wyndham. Therefore yoyr dinner issue was not their responsibility plus there were other options to go get dinner for your family rather than granola bars. As far as the flashlight cell phone all have flashlights and you said you were getting ready to go to bed soon anyway that's why you asked the hotel to come the next day to fix the shower situation. For a two night stay.

Sorry I just don't see what the hotel is responsible for to warrant compensation.

I think it would have been great customer service for them to have given you some kind of compensation towards a simple meal. Not due to them "owing" you, but just to offer great service to guests having a rocky first night at their resort due to no fault of the guests. The fact that they wouldn't make any gesture at all says something about the level of service they choose to provide. You weren't wronged, but you might want to consider if you want to stay with them again in the future if you don't care for the "not our problem" attitude you got.

If they did compensate one, they should compensate all. I don't know if most business can take a financial hit like that. Most business operate on slim margins as it is, for them to comp $100 in food per room defeats the point of operating a hotel, especially when this is considered an act of God, a power outage can happen any time, a transformer blows and people are without power.
We were out of power for over 5 days with Irma, the electric companies didn't compensate anyone. 5 DAYS. All the food in the fridge and freezer spoiled.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try to not let it bother me.

I think it was really the hot water issue that bugged me, the rest just topped it off.

They fixed it while we were gone. I was just exhausted and stressed last night but we had a terrific day anyway! Thank you all for your replies.

I took cold showers for a week at Fort Wilderness and was only annoyed during the shower. As soon as I was out, back to Disney fun! They finally fixed it for the second week we were there.

Power outages happen all the time in Florida, with our cloud to ground lightning. No big deal, we just make it fun for the grandchildren if they are with us. Kids take their cues from adults, so if you act relaxed and like it's a fun chance to play camp out or pioneer family, they will relax and have fun, too.

Does your local power company typically compensate you during a power outage?

Compensation? No not really.

You kinda lost me because you said you paid a decent amount of money. I dislike when people throw that card out there. No one likes power outages and they suck but they happen, it's life, sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches. Plus truth is not everything should come in the form of "what compensation/should I expect compensation". I'm sure there were plenty of other people besides you in that resort. What you paid for it shouldn't make you more important than other people.

I don't often say this really but from the various threads you have I get the impression you expect a lot from the outside world when things don't go your way and you admit you overreact. I mean no disrespect but perhaps take a step back and reevaluate your traveling expectations, your customer service expections, etc.

What I would comment to the resort when checking out for constructive feedback purposes is ensuring flashlights, since they provided them, come with working batteries. The emergency lights may or may not work depending on what type of power outage and how bad it was.

As far as your hot water issue. You told them to come the next day because you were going to bed..but then you reenforced to the front desk not too long later when the power was out about the hot water not working :confused3. When you told them to come the next day you accepted that the issue wasn't immediately pressing. If you wanted it fixed then and there then you needed to let the resort know that. It's possible they didn't have a maintenance crew to work on it that night but still you told them to come the next day. Then all of a sudden when the power goes out you remind them about the hot water issue and bring up that you paid a decent amount.

Power outages happen all the time in Florida,
Shoot power outages happen everywhere all the time :D.

We have it less as our power lines are buried underground. They still happen just not as often as my mom for instance whose power lines are above ground.

In my area we have them due to lightening, we have them due to extreme cold, we have them due to winds, we have them due to tornadoes, we have them due to ice storms, we have them due to normal disruptions at the transfer stations, we have them when people hit power poles, we probably have had them when it's gotten really hot though I think they are more resilent to heat in our area than to cold, etc

The resort should give you some fresh flashlight batteries.

Other than that, nothing. You may live in an area with little lighting or power outages, but in Florida they are much more common. Florida has frequent thunderstorms that knock out power.

When you go on vacation, you have in your mind that things will go perfectly, but sometimes they don't. Just be thankful you weren't riding on the monorail when the power went out!

You know Sometimes it is better to think twice Before you post a thread like this.

Good to know you had a great time.

I am just curious to what you were expecting when you went to the Front Desk? With the power out in the grid, there is nothing within their control. They are not running the entire resort off generators in such a situation. You are a timeshare resort. With a power outage like that, it is unlikely restaurants onsite could do anything either. That leaves you with the option of eating granola bars for dinner or hopping in your car to go somewhere that did have power for dinner.

Just curious as to what type of compassion you were looking for?
