Just curious if any other parents have experience with this. DD6 refuses to wear anything that isn't soft knit (or a loose dress). She has worn blue jeans for only 5 minutes in her entire life, and it was for a picture because her grandparents gave her the jeans. She has always been what I call "touch sensitive" and is miserable in anything she considers uncomfortable or scratchy.

This wasn't a big deal when she was a toddler because it was easy to find 100% cotton knit outfits. It is getting harder as she is getting older.

Any ideas on:

How to get her used to other clothes?

Where to continue to find 100% cotton "stretchy" clothing for older kids?

Thanks!
Peggy

DD wouldn't wear jeans to save her life. The only pants she'd wear were khakis. She wore dresses and tights and sweaters every day. In the summer it was sundresses.

Until she went to 1st grade and they wore nothing else. And all of a sudden, no more khakis, dresses, tights, sweaters. Jeans and only jeans. I have a hard time getting her to wear anything else.

Be careful what you wish for!

As for where to buy the softer stuff -- Hanna Anderson, Talbots, Land's End, CWD. She actually will still wear her Hanna and Land's End stuff. The rest of it is now gracing the little girl down the street.

My dd was the same way until she was in like 5th grade or so. I got the knits from Lands End, Macy's Sears...
Now she laughs about it, cause she would never in a million years put on a knit.

Yes be careful what you wish for. My DD will only wear jeans in school. Maybe a cute top, but its alljeans all the time.

Even her capris are denim!

She may have sensory integration issues, my son does. Well, he has a lot of other issues, too, but I have to watch what I put on him because of his sensitivities. I have a bunch of shirts I can't hand down to his brother because he will stretch the collars out.

Ask her to pick out the clothes. Sometimes the tags are really scratchy and that's what is bothering her. My son's main thing is shirts, so he almost lives in tshirts.

good luck

Suzanne

My son was that way. He would only wear "soft" pants! I got most of his clothes at the healthtex outlet. I think somewhere during 2nd grade, then came the jeans! Considering the price of the kids jeans nowadays, I miss the healthtex!! :bounce:

My DD (8) is the same way! I have given up wasting money on jeans that get worn once. I get her knit clothes at Lands End, Target, Kohls, and Kids (Toys) R Us. Two decent brands to look for for older girls are "Girls Club" by Healthtex and "Genuine Girl" by Osh Kosh (I think).

Many thanks for all the specific suggestions on where to buy and what brands to look for. Just in time for school shopping!

I also got a chuckle out of everyone warning me to be careful what I wish for. I guess it isn't such a big deal if I have to send her to school in dresses almost every day.

Suzanne, I would be interested in learning more about "sensory integration." Could this affect eating habits as well? She is very particular about what passes her lips and would probably be happy on a liquid diet.

Thanks again!
Peggy

Peggy,

Food issues can also be sensory integration disorder. My son has a difficult time with textures...we have to cajole him into trying new foods. Funny thing is, once he's tried many foods he is fine. I have a kid who constantly asks for broccoli, once he got over the texture of it!

Feel free to PM me. I have to dig up my links, but I'll be happy to pass them on to you. They're in the home pc that is taken apart right now, but I remember printing a hard copy to add them to the laptop!

Oh, this brings back memories. DS#2 is 16 and I had/have a heck of a time with him. Fortunately I had discovered Hanna Andersson's catalog and all those clothes I had bought for older DS were soft, french terry.

They make clothes for infants to women's sizes and some for older boys too. Love their stuff and it wore like iron. I used to buy their coats from them too and I had a zipper break one year after buying it. They sent me a new coat.

Land's end is also good. Try leggings, stretchy stuff like that and remove the tags with a small cuticle scissor. It helps.

I have been going through this with my 4yodd. Even some of the knit shorts "Don't feel right" to her. Clothes are a huge struggle. I took her shopping and she picked out a pair of khakis and a pair of jeans(both are so loose they need a belt). When we got them home, she told me they didn't feel right and she won't wear them. She won't even wear long john pajamas to bed because they are "too tight". It really drives me crazy but she will go off to preschool in wind pants, sweat pants and dresses. She also has huge food issues. She will not eat a vegetable or a piece of fruit. We have put 4 string beans or peas (or whatever) on her plate and she will literally gag and choke on them. Her Dr. said since she drinks plenty of milk, eats yogurt etc and her weight and height are good and she is never sick, "Just let her do what she is doing". It can be tough.

DS rejects jeans because of lack of comfort. He has to "feel"
clothes before he'll put them on. Only wears one type of sock
too and certain underwear. Prefers to be sans clothing-lol!

My dd is 7 and she doesn't like Jeans because of the way they cut her in the waist when she sits. I have found that many stores are now carrying the poly type bellbottoms, with the elastic waists, which work well for her. Also I have seen some cargo style pants with drawstring waists for the fall hitting the racks. Good luck to you, I know I dread shopping for this exact reason, she is way too big for the cute knit clothes she used to like so much.
