OK, here comes a dumb question.

I know how to view info about settings used when picture was taken when the picture is still on my card and I view it on the camera. But is that information available somewhere after I put the piture on my computer. I have been studying on these boards and some camera forums, and I've been experimenting with many different settings. But I'm just wondering how to know what setings I've used and therefore learn what works.

Do I have to record all of that information or is it with the picture somewhere?

That information is carried to your PC when you copy the pictures to your hard drive. It is actually embedded as part of the image. How much will be brought across depends on how you tranfer the images from either the camera or the memory card.

If you use the download software provided with the camera to copy the images either directly from the camera or indirectly from the memory card, you have the best likelihood of maintaing all the exif data stored in the image. Additionally this will and also increase chances of being able to export that information in to a single text file for analysis using other tools provided from the camera manufacturer.

What software do you use to view the pictures? Some software allows you to see the EXIF data, some does not. :)

For example I have Photoshop Elements, and if I go to "File Info" I can see the EXIF data:

screen.jpg

Hope this helps :)

If you have windows xp on your computer, you can also check some of the EXIF data from there.

Right click on file you want to look at and choose properties from the menu that appears.

A dialog box will appear with tabs at the top. Some of tab will be called General and Summary.

Click on Summary tab. There will be a button at the bottom that will either say "Advanced >>" or "<< Simple" If the button says "Advanced >>" click that button.

Once that happens or if the button already says "<< Simple" you are at the screen to read the EXIF data. You will see two columns with properties and their values such as Width, Height, Bit Depth, Camera Model, etc.

You can only read the data however and cannot change it using this method.

Oh, this is awesome! Thanks so much for your help. I was able to get the information on the summary page in properties just like you said caniswolfie. Right now I am just using the microsoft camera and scanner wizard to download the pics from my camera. I just file them into dated folders I have set up. I edit on Microsoft Picture It! Publishing.

I need to find the time to find a system I want to use to store, file, edit pictures but life is too busy right now. Have had this camera for 3 years and finally learning how to use it. And we are considering a switch to a Mac so I am going to wait until after that to learn a new program.
