How to surprise a 7 year old ?

We plan on going in April, but plan on going after picking up DS from school at lunch time. Need some ideas on how to surprise him. He has been 4 times and we will fly as to driving. If we were driving I would just tell him we are going on a road trip. I would love to tell him something special and video his reaction. I figure we would just pick him up in a cab or airport van. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well, I surprised my DH with a trip to Napa/Sonoma for his 40th birthday. I'm not sure who would be easier to fool--my DH or a 7-year-old! Probably DH! Anyway, I did all the research and planning. I told him I wanted it to be a surprise. Once we got to the airport, I made him wear headphones and listen to music so he couldn't hear the announcements either in the airport or on the plane. I made him close his eyes whenever we got near the gate and we sat facing away from signs indicating where the plane was headed. Onced we arrived in SF, I couldn't keep our location a secret any longer. He thought at that point that we were vacationing in SF. When we finally got our car, I directed him out of the airport and toward Napa. Until he started to see the road signs he couldn't figure it out! Or at least that's what he claims to this very day!

Once we were there, the bed and breakfast where we stayed in Glen Ellen and the cottage in Calistoga were surprises to him since he hadn't been in on any of the planning.

Some of those things might work for you son. Have you stayed in the same hotel in the past? What about this time? Could you plan something different to do that you haven't done before that you think he'd like?
