So trying to plan a trip for next year in dec. if the resort is sold out already this year how can you see what room rates were when available to get a ballpark cost for 2020?

MDE, places to stay, pick the resort, Room Rates, under the Type of Room, click on "view rate calendar".

Maybe I’m missing some part of your question, but can’t you just look at your dates for December 2020 right on the Disney website?

That is exactly what I was wondering. You can view resorts for next December now.
