Yeah, so what the title says--do I need Canadian cash for cabs in Vancouver before our Alaska cruise? Do they take credit cards? But, do I really want to do that if they do? My credit card says it charges a percentage in international fees.

3% of a $50 cab ride is $1.50. I wouldn't buy a car in another country with a credit card that has foreign transaction fees (or maybe I would if it were a really good deal) but 3% (which is the typical) isn't really that much. Another option is to just get a card without the fees - there's tons of cards out there with that option. I have 3.
We used our credit card for everything last year. Yes we had a few fees but it didn't add up to much and it was easier than dealing with cash. If I was going to be there a long time I might rethink it but for our one day before the cruise we were good.
I would use the credit card. Even with a credit card fee, it's a better deal than using American dollars at par. You could use your ATM card to get Canadian dollars, but that comes with a fee as well.
In general..... yes, credit card. However, before you get in.... confirm with the driver that the machine is working. If they say MAYBE..... be afraid.
Credit cards means you don't have to deal with left over change when you leave the country.... as well as strange objects called "loonies" & "toonies".
Also beware that per Vancouver, you can only have 4 in a cab even if it is a van. Found out the hard way. We had 5 in our Disney Alaska cruise and was forced to take two cabs per law!
