How have you and your family dealt with being laid off from your job? Did you have advance notice? If so, how did you change things ahead of time to make it easier?

Monday my husband found out that his plant will be closing by the end of this year. Luckily the lay-offs will not start until June so we have time to prepare. We are very thankful to know that we have time to prepare because it could have been a no notice type situation.

Thankfully one car, even though it is old and falling apart, is completely paid for. Our second car, the one I drive typically, will be paid off by the end of this year. Right now we are focusing on paying that car off. We are thinking of putting our tax refund towards that balance, which would leave us a balance of about $1,300. Sadly we don't get back tons of tax money.

Larry carries our health insurance because his coverage is much better and MUCH cheaper than what my company offers. His coverage is less than $150 per month for medical, vision and dental. My medical only is nearly $500 a month for the two of us. :faint: But we need to keep insurance, especially on me because of all the meds I take.

What I've decided to do - which would make my dad pass out because I'm not putting all the money in the bank - is to have some envelopes in our safe with different labels on them. Each pay check the amount of my health insurance will start being divided among the envelopes as well as another bill we luckily got paid off this month which totaled $120.

We figure that if we can get the car paid off by the time he looses his job then the car payment with the $120 payment will come close to the insurance money and we won't hurt too bad. But we also need to adjust to living on only a portion of his salary.

Does anyone know the amount you get off of unemployment? I was thinking it was around 2/3 to 3/4 of your normal bring home pay. Is this correct? We also want to start putting aside an amount of his pay reduction in the envelopes. We figure if we can start doing this now the adjustment won't be so difficult and so traumatic on us when it happens.

We are making envelopes for the following: Groceries, Gas, Spending Money, Car - maintenance, taxes, etc, Medical Expenses, Misc Expenses, Pets - grooming, vets, food. We are trying to think of anything else we may need them for. We really haven't had time to think through every little thing.

How are you adjusting and how have you adjusted? Any tips you want to share?

My DH's company shut down last April. Each state pays different unemployment, but my DH collected Washington state's maximum which was $515 per week. You can call your unemployment office now to get an estimate of what he would collect.

I have a good job and we are debt free except for our reasonable mortgage payment. Honestly, we didn't really notice his income missing very much. He is now back at work. He did take advantage of the Unemployment benefit of retraining and spent last summer at a trade school. He was able to collect the unemployment benefits while going to school.

Hang in there, sounds like you are in a fairly good economic situation like we were and things should probably go smoothly. But beware that most job hunting is now done online and you will probably lose some of your DIS time because he will take over the computer!:lmao:

Also, many companies take a month or so before contacting you after you apply for a job. So it might be best to start early sending out resumes. And honestly, there are a lot of people applying for each job. So it might work be best if he started brushing up the resume and looking now as it takes a while to find a new job in this economy.

I just wanted to say I'm sorry about your husband. You sound like you have a good plan.

Unemployment is different for each state. Here in Florida, the maximum is $275 a week. (I think?) So it's important you check that out ASAP.

Also, since he has such a long time, be as proactive as possible in finding a new job now so he isn't competing with others for jobs when the plant does close.

Good luck!

My husband has heard "rumors" floating around his job that they will be cutting it to one shift (currently have 2) and they will be laying off over 600 people. This should probably happen by the end of next month for us. I'm personally terrified or mortgage payment went up becuase of our property taxes and its kind of hard to pay right now, when we have money. I can't imagine what it will be like if my husband gets laid off.

We will be saving as much of our tax refund as possible. We have to fix our van and get anew computer (I need it for my job) the rest will go into savings.

We have 2 children, a mortgage, a van payment (only $125 a month), and no credit card debt or any debt beyond what I just listed. My job only brings in around $100 a week (on a good week) I should be able to put more time in my job if he gets laid off so we'll have a bit of extra money (Not really extra it will still buy groceries)

Sigh

I wish things would get better.

DH get laid off next month. He will get almost 6 weeks of unpaid vacation which will carry us into the first of May. After that unemployment insurance, which here is about $375/week. We will be okay(I pray) since I work fulltime. DH is very resourceful and is thinking of starting a business. I am hoping that by the time the unemployment runs out that the economy will start to turn around. I know we are in alot better shape than most of the people around here that have gotten laid off. Thankfully we have lived below our means and have managed to save 'some' money.

I had a 3 month notice before I was out of work and knew I would also be receiving 15 weeks severance pay. I still freaked a bit because at the time, we had only owned our home for one year.

The single thing that helped the most however was something drilled into my head over the years by my mom was to always live as though you only have 1 income. For instance, when buying our home, we made sure we could pay it on just DH's salary, because in her generation "woman have babies and don't go back to work, so their salary shouldn't be counted". Never had the babies, but I still lost my job and knowing we could do it on 1 paycheck helped. Of course, I still had to sit down and see it on paper just how it was going to happen, but it was doable.

I ended up finding a job before the 3 months were up. I had to stay till the end to receive the severance. The new place left me take 2 weeks off between leaving the old job & starting the new job.

Good luck. You can do it. Just put your mind to it.

Just got done watching CNN and they said men are being laid off way more than women. Probably because they always get paid more than us.

We went through this situation several years ago when the entire division DH was working in was closed. He is a high level computer consultant. We had less than 2 weeks warning. It happened the day he returned to work after a Disney vacation.
Insurance was an issue. A private policy will run several hundred a month for a family.

As soon as we found out we took out an equity loan on our house. We never had to touch it. The balance is still 0 but it gave me peace of mind knowing I had it if I needed to write a check.

Start looking for another job NOW. Don't wait. Network with friends, relatives and old working buddies. Call everyone and keep a log of what you've done. You've got a lot of advance warning. Be flexible. Decide if you're willing to relocate or do odd jobs until the right thing comes through.

Reduce your current debt but do not use all of your available cash. We cut out all non essentials. We were lucky to have paid for cars.

It can be a depressing situation. Stick together and work to get it resolved. You've got to keep each other going. It's easy to get down but it's not productive to stay there.

We are going thru this now. DH did get a few months notice. He is getting - I think - 5 mos. severence. He got a stay bonus for staying on with the co. till the end. We're not in too much of a panic yet. It's only been one week so far. I think the max. unempl. here is $380. We're cutting back where we can but we're pretty good anyway so there is not too much that we can cut back on.

Recruiters have told my DH that things are very bad on the job front. He has had a few interviews so far but we're still waiting to hear. He may have another interview coming up next week.

We're trying to stay positive. I'm a SAHM so there is no other income coming in.

Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone! He is already looking but there just aren't many jobs in our area. Just last year our area lost 3 percent of the available jobs in the area. Last month several more employers announced more lay offs. Things are really bad in this area. Just checked more numbers and according to a local newspaper as of December 2008 there were 18,594 people in the area unemployed.

Just like with my husband's plant, so many are closing here and moving operations to countries where it they can save money, like Mexico.

I've got a few friends out of work so another friend and I help them look for jobs every week and it is sad to see how few listings there are. With the state Employment Security Commission there used to be pages and pages of job listings - 20 or more; now there are maybe 5 pages of listings and that is for ALL the local jobs, not a certain type.

But we are determined to make it through strong as ever.

Hugs to all of you in the same boat.

Chell I am so sorry to see you two going through this~~~ To all in search of employment :grouphug:

My heart goes out to those of you that are about to or have been laid off....:grouphug: .....DH sells tools and equipment to the military so unless the military or the tool companies that make the tools go out of business we are okay. WE will always have the military and always need tools throughout the world so I am hoping tool companies will be fine.

Just in case we have gotten rid of almost all of our debt...credit card debt has been gone for a year already and our Home equity line is almost gone. WE want to be as free of debt as possible just in case.

I remember this happening also in the 90's ....hard to find jobs. WE pulled through it and I believe we will pull through it again. Hang tight and dont be afraid to ask friends and family for help if need be.

All my friends that are having trouble and my family knows we are here to help them for as long as we can.

I send you all some pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: to help you through these hard times.

Be prepared, NOW.

Timelines change, my brother in law was told his plant(HUGE COMPANY) going to be shut down this upcoming summer... They took their annual winter break during Xmas and New years, well the plant never reopened.

I got laid off at the end of January.. no notice and no severance.
The first thing was to get unemployment, which in ILL for me and 2 kids was $500 per week. We carried health insurance with DH so that wasn't a big factor but we needed two incomes to live.. so DH and I sat down and redid the budget and I am cooking more and baking more than before. We are only driving 1 car.. but I am applying to lots of positions and hope things will be on track soon.

As others have said . get the resume up to date and start looking.. they are telling me that in this market it may take a while..

I was laid off (with 4 weeks notice). Next Friday is my last day. Unemployment benefits here in Maryland max out at $380 a week.

Sorry to hear about everybody that has lost their jobs. Let's hope things start to get better.

Thankfully we were able to log into our state's website to see what his weekly payment will be. Because of the deductions he currently has (401K, insurance, flexible spending account, etc.) he will only be about $15 short per week. That has lifted a huge weight off our shoulders. BUT we still want to prepare for the worst.

He wants to go to school if that is an option for him. He is so young that a degree would really be perfect for him. And that way when I get old he can get a job making more money to take care of me so he won't put me in a nursing home. :smokin:

Today rumors were going around saying most employees may get to stay until November. Goodness. This will just be a wait and see game.

He wants to stick it out until the end and see if he can get education assistance. That and the fact that there aren't really any jobs here.

This morning I was reading an article saying some thing our unemployment rate is now 15%.

I really hope this country starts to turn around and things look up for us real soon.
