This is my first time posting a question , although I have been a longtime visitor to the site and gotten some very helpful information..so thank you! Is there a trick to securing a campsite reservation for the week of Thanksgiving? I have been checking online almost daily since May to no avail...please help!

Unfortunately your best bet would have been booking it last year when the reservations for 2012 opened but don't give up hope. I have read on here about people piecing together reservations a day at a time. Remember too that people change plans and cancel all the time. Just keep checking probably multiple times per day.

You need to check online multiple times a day.
Things open up when you least expect.
I have friends that just got a premium site for Thanksgiving week, 2 weeks ago.
Keep trying..Book more days than you need and adjust later. Try an earlier check-in date and a later check out date.
As long as you book room (site) only, you can adjust up to 8 days before check-in with no penalty.

How to get Thanksgiving week campground reservation

1) One of the busiest periods at the campground.
2) Best way to get a ressie is:
. . . Prayer
. . . Hope
. . . Luck
. . . Call 1-year in advance
. . . Talk to an astrologer
. . . Wait for a cancellation

NOTE: I will let you determine which is the best method.

You might also try a travel agent...there are some who specialize in the Fort. Last month, I was trying to reserve for the period right after Thanksgiving, and I couldn't get anything to come up online, no matter what combinations of days/site types I tried. I contacted a travel agent via email, and she had me booked with exactly what I wanted, within minutes. It didn't cost me anything extra to go this route either. It might be worth a try if you can't find anything on your own.

When someone cancels a reservation the dates are opened up in the system the next morning around 7:30. That is when you want to call.

Thanks so much for your replies...I will certainly keep trying using any and all of your suggestions!

we have booked sites online as late as a week before.
We have also pieced together some trips.
If you check regularly you will probably find something eventually, keep trying.
I can't tell you how many times my sister in law made 2 3 4 reservations and then cancelled the unwanted ones before the cut off date. I would imagine other people do the same. AS you get closer to most holidays the more cancellations they get.
We've also extended our stay by adding days once we were there.
If you can deal with last minute plans I'm sure you could get a site, the suggestions previously mentioned are good ones as well.
Hope it goes well.

We book 499 days out. Best way. But, as others have said, some will cancel as you get closer to the date so you have to keep checking. Absolute best way is to use a travel agent. They can see the dates and know the strategies earlier and better than we can. I made my own for years, but it was getting harder and harder. I now use a TA.
