We bought a house in November and the grass in the front and back yards are patchy and brownish. I forgot all about it and now that I can see it again due to the snow melting I don't know where to begin! How do I get nice green grass to grow in the yards? What should I buy, how long does it take? Help!! Thank you!

Your snow is melting??? I am SO jealous. Even with the downpour of rain on Tuesday (which caused flooding in my garage and basement), the snow remains!

Here's a link to a website that has some lawn tips. Be sure to check out the links on the left side of the page the link takes you to.

Lawn Care Tips

Lawn care is not easy. It's a constant battle and sometimes I feel I am losing it. (haha - yeah, I am losing both the lawn battle and my mind! )

Good luck and best wishes for you and yours in your new home.

Yes, our snow is melting but we are supposed to get more today which will turn to rain  . I thought it would be nice to see what was under the snow but the grass is patchy and brown :faint: . Thank you for the link! Have a good day!

You have 2 options.

One is to dig it all up, bring in some new loam, spread it and reseed.

The other is to start giving it some nutrients and feed on a schedule...It might take a few years, but it'll be green all over.

And if you plan on using fertilizers, try to go with a natural product as possible...it will really be better for the environment.

Dig it all up? Nooooooooooooo! :D I think I'll be patient and feed it the nutrients! ;) Is there a certain brand name fertilizer that is better than others?

You're sooo lucky the snow is melting. We're still in the deep freeze. I haven't seen my lawn in a long time.

My .02 for what it's worth. First thing would be fertilizer.

My Dad used to put fertilizer down on the snow. When the snow melts it feeds the grass. He also used it on the walkway to the house to prevent slipping and a fertilizer there too.
Once that's down you can start your plan of attack on the brown spots which will probably be scratch and seed, scratch and seed until you get it all.

Good luck & congrats on your new home!

Thank you for your help everyone! I have so much to learn and I'll let you know how it goes. :D

Welcome to the F&GB, Cinmell! :)

I see the Buds have taken good care of you! :)

Congrats to you on your new home, and we look forward to hearing how your grass growing goes!! :)

You can also aerate your yard....
I rented one of those machines and did this to mine in the fall a couple years back and doing this really helped...along with fertilizing..:D
