How to get a hotel same day when travelling

We use hotels.com but we like their stay 10 nights get one free. We've cashed in free rooms twice now.

When we drive to Orlando from Texas (and back) I pick up the hotel coupon books at the rest stops. Then I look up the hotel options on my phone to get reviews and see if they have rooms available to book, and we pick choice 1 or choice 2 because those coupon specials cannot be booked in advance. We've had great luck with BWestern, full breakfasts. At several places along I 10. I was really surprised that I've never had a problem using the coupon, there has always been availability.
