My niece, a Stanford grad who who's as an investment broker for Chas. Schwab... wants to go to Carpentry School!

I swear that Ty has everyone wanting to build something!

She's done her research but she thinks she'd like to find out how are the reputations of these schools by the companies that hire or use them...???

Of course she wants ME to do this part because she plans on moving here to Atlanta to go to school.

Any ideas or ways to find a good one? SOMEONE on the DIS knows a little bit of EVERYTHING so of course I came here!

Thanks in advance!

Does she know the hard facts of life about carpentry work? Most of my friends who are carpenters make little money, generally don't have health benefits, and are out of work a chunk of time each year. When the economy is weak, construction is the first place to suffer.
That said, if she is still determined she would probably have to go to a vo-tech. If you are a union town she would do a bit better being in a union. To look good, they frequently give a bit of preference to females. They pay much better and you get really good benefits. But since they pay more, they are often laid off more then non-union companies. By becoming a union apprentice she will have a definite carreer path with training included. They train you. Other construction trades pay better and are less likely to be laid off. Plumbers, refrigeration and hvac, electricions for ex.

Thanks for the info, Tiggeroo!

Wow, I'm going to pass this on to her.

What type of carpentry would she like to specialize in?

There are framers who frame houses.

There are carpenters who specialize in scaffolding to get to heights.

There are cabinetmakers who specialize in custom-made kitchen cabinets, hutches, furniture, etc.

There are even specialized woodworkers who make musical instruments like harps, guitars, dulcimers, etc.

I'd think if she has a specific idea of what type of carpentry she's interested in, she'd have an easier time finding a school to fit her needs.
