We have 5 day park hopper passes and will be at Disneyland Monday through Friday the first week in December. I like to plan ahead and would really appreciate any advice for how to break up our time. For example, what days should we spend in Disneyland vs. California Adventure? When should we use our magic morning and do we get one early morning in Disneyland AND one in California Adventure or do we just get one early morning and pick the park?
How about the best days to go to the night shows?
Any best times to go to character dining and what are your favorites?
Okay so this just got to be bigger topic, but really I would appreciate any advice you can give for planning the best vacation ever... We have six adults (young adult through grandparent age) and two girls age 5 and 9 plus a one-year-old baby.
We want to see all the shows, meet all the characters, press pennies, trade pins, get princess makeovers, etc.
Thank you for your help!

I've also got a 5-day hopper but for June 2015, traveling with an another adult, an autistic 4yo and a 15yo teenager. Wondering how to split these days up also. Staying across the street from Disneyland Resort.

Snap I'm going in November for 10 days and have 5 day park hoppers wondering what the best days to go to each park is and also I heard some shows like Fantasmic are only on at weekends?! :confused3

We had 5 park days and 1 off day. They went like this, #1-DLR, #2- DCA, #3- off, #4- DLR, #5- DCA with a hop over to DLR late at night, #6- DLR with a hop to DCA to take final rides on favourites and then back again to DLR for goodbye fireworks.

For our return trip in a couple years we plan to do the same 5 days (since they don't sell 6 day hoppers or we'd do 6 days) except add another off day.

Specifics depend on the dates you are going. And where exactly you stay.

With 5 days you will have time to see everything and your favorites more than once without stress.

You're going during the holiday season. How much "holiday" do you want in your trip? I ask because that could affect your schedule as well.

In other words, is World of Color-Winter Dreams important? Is Viva Navidad important? Is the Holiday Time Tour something of interest to you? Do you want to meet Santa Claus? Do you want to be sure to catch the Winter Castle lit up in icicle lights? Do you want to get a group photo in front of It's a Small World Holiday at night, when the colored lights are aglow? Do you want to be sure to catch the "snow" (really, it's teeny tiny bubbles) at the end of Believe in Holiday Magic fireworks? Are you interested in A Christmas Fantasy Parade?

As for character meals --

My personal favorite is Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel. It is open for breakfast/brunch and dinner (but not for lunch, specifically), and it has the widest variety of food/largest buffet out of all the character meals.

Lots and lots of people love Surf's Up with Mickey at the Paradise Pier Hotel. It is the only meal where you can meet Mickey and Stitch, and Daisy Duck is usually there too. The character interaction is great.

Minnie & Friends in Disneyland has the most characters of all the meals. I have not done this meal but all reviews and photos indicate that there are many characters.

Storytellers Cafe's Critter Breakfast at the Grand Californian Hotel is a 'quieter' character meal, but the setting of Storytellers is a bonus (check out the real gingerbread house near the entrance to the restaurant). A lot of people think this meal has the best food. I like the restaurant, but as a character meal this one is my least favorite.

I have not done the all-Princess meal at Ariel's Grotto.

When it's crowded--as it will be during HolidayTime, the local practice is to hop from the more crowded park to the less crowded park, depending on your mood, the time of day, and the things you want to ride/watch/do. If you have hoppers, there's no reason to think in terms of "which day for which park". You'll likely be in both parks almost every day.

Your magic morning is only good at Disneyland, not Disney California Adventure. Only Disney hotel guests get early entry to DCA. Definitely arrive at least half an hour before it begins and use it--you'll be able to ride all of Fantasyland in that hour, which will be impossible to day at any other time of day, as FL crowds significantly as the day progresses.

One thing you need to know is that your Magic Morning, is only good at Disneyland and you can choose to use it on Tuesday or Thursday, since you won't be there on Saturday!

If you were to stay at a Disney Property Hotel, you would then automatically get Extra Magic Hour(as a perk for staying On-site), which are offered at Disneyland on: Tues., Thurs., and Sat., and at DCA on: Sun., Mon., Wed., and Fri.:)

You can pick up a current/recent Pressed Penny List at City Hall, inside Disneyland---it will list locations according to which Park---so fun!:thumbsup2

I'll be getting to the HoJo on Sunday evening, hitting the parks Mon-Fri. Since we don't have EE or MM, we plan on hitting the non-early entry parks each day. And that really works out because DL is really the park you want to spend the most time in.

DL: Mon, Wed, Fri
DCA: Tues and Thurs

I would say there's a good chance we hit DCA at some point on Friday, because my son really loves that place. Of course, we picked up APs for the upcoming year, so we may just go to DCA on Saturday morning before we head home. But really, two days at DCA should be enough to do all the things we want to do.

If you have hoppers (which I highly recommend) there's really no reason to plan "which park, which day" because you can just hop back and forth every day. It's a very short walk between parks.

This! If you're there 5 days and you already have hoppers, just show up. You will have plenty of time to see everything and if one park feels crowded, just walk the 2 minutes to the other one. If they both feel crowded, go take a break at the pool.

I just got back last night and based on my last 3 trips (1: late Feb 2013, Thurs Magic Morning, 2: late March 2014, Thurs MM, 3: Aug 2014, Tues MM) the DL MM's are horrible for Fantasyland. There are 2x folks there for rope drop and everyone dashes for Fantasyland. All rides almost immediately have 1/2 hour waits. I also went this past Sunday on a non-MM opening at rope drop and fantasyland had people but was far from packed- 5-10 min waits for everything except Peter Pan (which goes to 30-45 min wait within 2 minutes of park opening) and A&E. We did 5 rides in FL during that hour while DH waited in line for A&E.

When we did have our MM at DL this past Tuesday we went to Tomorrowland instead which was empty- walk on for Astro Oribters, Buzz and Space Mountain - did not do Star Tours but I would expect that to be empty too.

CA early entry as mentioned is only for on site guests and is truly empty although not too many rides are open but we're generally able to do Soarin', Toy Story (walk on) and Mater's and then grab a RSR fastpass before heading over for the fun wheel and whatnot. I so wish more of Paradise pier was open during the early entry hour.

I'd plan out where you want to be for rope drop for the first 3 days then regroup based on what you want to hit. For your DL MM I'd opt to do Tomorrowland during the MM then head across to stuff like Indy, BTMR, HM, Pirates when the park has regular opening as those rides will be empty.

Then do a regular day at DL and head to FL.

As for Character meals, if your 4yo is female, you may love Ariel's Grotto. We just did the breakfast with DD4 (no A&E sighthings - just Ariel, Mulan, Belle, Aurora and Snow White) but DD had a great time - and we had done the lunch the year prior. I've seen young boys love this experience too and the breakfast foods were yummy. I had tri tip w scrambled eggs, DH had a veggie fritatta and DD had waffles.

We've also done Goofy's Kitchen but 2 of us can't eat gluten and the gluten free offerings were really sparse compared to other meals we've had at DL. Goofy's does have a great mix of characters. I really want to try the Surf's Up breakfast as Iv'e heard it's super fun.

We always start by making a spreadsheet and listing all the special happenings each day. Opening closing time. Early entrance times (even if you don't have them so you know where the crowds will be). Show, Parade and Firework times. Ride closures, etc.

Then we start plugging in our plan but making sure we catch a ride that might be closed or opening up part way through our trip. Making sure we plan a Cars morning and Fantasyland morning. Plugging in what shows we want to see. Then we'll make a couple reservations. Next thing ya know you have your schedule.

Remember the best thing at Disney is to have a plan, and then be prepared to change your plan.

Even on quick trips when I have no idea how things will go the second we start the spreadsheet the map is basically laid out for us without much work.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what "A&E" is.

Thanks. They aren't on my radar since I am not into character meet and greets. And I've never seen Frozen.

Sherry if you're answer is yes to all of the above except meeting Santa Claus how would you best split up 5 days between the 18th and 26th November including those two days. I also want to see Fantasmic which I heard might only be on weekends and I'm staying in a good neighbour hotel. I've got park hoppers as well.

Hmmm... Let me think about it for a minute. I'm not sure exactly how I would break up 5 days from start to finish, except for that I would probably do World of Color-Winter Dreams on a separate night than Fantasmic, and on a separate night than the Believe in Holiday Magic fireworks.

I, personally, might try to hit Fantasmic on one night, BIHM fireworks on another night and Winter Dreams on yet another night. I might do the Christmas Fantasy Parade on the same day as BIHM fireworks, though, and catch the Winter Castle in icicle lights on that same night.

Viva Navidad was happening during the day and at night, from what I recall, but I think I would see a daytime Viva Navidad and then do Winter Dreams later that night.

If I had a few hours to spare on any given night outside of the parks, I might stroll around Downtown Disney and enjoy the festive atmosphere, and also walk to the Grand Californian Hotel and the Disneyland Hotel to either eat or check out decorations (such as the cute gingerbread house near the entrance to Storytellers Café at the GCH, and the giant fake gingerbread Castle at the DLH, in the Fantasy Tower lobby). I might visit Trader Sam's at the DLH, for some fun adult beverages and to see their whimsical, themed holiday décor. I might sit down and relax for a while in the GCH lobby, enjoying the Carolers and/or the pianist playing holiday music.

Then again, I always set aside "hotel time" to explore and see what the decorations are like!

I do agree with the others who have said that it is not as necessary to have a solid plan when you have 5-day Hoppers. The Hoppers allow great flexibility, so if one park suddenly becomes too crowded, or your group gets bored, you can just walk across the Esplanade to the other park. If you plan on seeing something or doing something on the first or second day and don't make it, you still have more time to get to those things.

Five days is a good chunk of time to get things done in both parks (though no amount of time ever seems to be quite enough!:rotfl2:).

According to this schedule from November 2013, unless I am imagining things or somehow not reading it correctly, it appears that Fantasmic was running the entire week of Thanksgiving (which was on 11/28 in 2013), including the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week.

If that same sort of Fantasmic schedule applies this year, then F! would run every night from Friday, 11/21 through the rest of your trip (and beyond). So you would have quite a few chances to see it, I think -- if that same holiday week schedule is applicable this year.

The Holiday Time tour can tackle several things for you at once -- seats for A Christmas Fantasy Parade, and priority loading/boarding (essentially, like the equivalent of Fastpasses) on It's a Small World Holiday, Jingle Cruise and Haunted Mansion Holiday. IASWH and HMH are very popular -- especially during a holiday week -- and the seats for ACFP are really helpful. The tour -- while not crucial to the holiday experience -- could be a way to get all of those things done more efficiently and, in the case of the parade, more comfortably. I would probably do the latest tour available that day, which may be in the range of 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. (somewhere in that timeframe), which would put me at IASWH around the time when the colored lights go on (if I am not mistaken).
