How to convert from a backup resie to a new resie?

We are hoping to be new DVC members. I have a question ---

Let's say your home resort is Saratoga Springs. You would like to vacation from June 24 to July 4 2006. To accomplish this, you book at the 11 month window at Saratoga Springs. Then, in hopes of getting VWL, you call and are able to get Saratoga Springs at the 7 month window for your desired resie of June 24 to July 4 2006. Will DVC allow you to cancel your original resie at Saratoga Springs? How does this process work? Being new to DVC, this will be something that we take advantage of often. Is there anything else we need to know in executing this process?

In general, it's very simple. You reserve at 11 months with your home resort. Then at 7 months you call and see if the desired resort is available, if so, you cancel the old one and make the new one all at one time. Having said it's simple, there are MANY nuances that can be critical. Starting with your 11 months reservation, do you call and reserve day by day or wait until you can reserve it all at one time. Then it gets even more confusing when you try to change over. Do you wait and change all at once if available or do you call day by day for the 7 month reservation. And do you cancel the 11 month ressie or not before you get the entire new one, just in case you don't get the entire new reservation. What works best depends on your situation and how many points you have. If you have enough points to keep the 11 month reservation until the last day of the 7 month reservation is the safest and option most likely to be successful.
