I'm starting to train for the DL 10K, which will be my first distance race since I was in school many many years ago (before such a thing as an iPhone even existed). I'm going to want to take my iPhone with me on the race, mostly to use for taking pictures but also as a timer. I have an armband iPhone holder that I've used at the gym, but I don't think that'll work for the race because it's made of neoprene & it's hard to get the phone out of the case quickly, which will probably be important if I want to snap some impromptu pictures.

I've seen people running in my neighborhood with those belts that have a bunch of different slots to hold things, even small water bottles. I may get one of those but it seems like that would be annoying.

Does anyone else have tips for easy ways to carry your iPhone during the race?

I have a belt that just has a little stretchy pouch that fits my phone and a couple of other small things like ID, key, and GU.

I wear a fuel belt sometimes on long run days that has a small pouch but I hate wearing that because it's heavy.

Nike makes running pants/shorts that have a back pocket (it's positioned in the middle of your lower back) that my iPhone will fit into. It's a bit harder to get to but not much.

I have a hand-held water bottle that has a compartment specifically for a smart phone. The phone is completely concealed, but you can use the phone through the plastic. This works great for checking time, answering texts, etc. However, when I used it during the marathon, I was taking it in and out so often for pictures that I found it easier to just hold the phone. I didn't even really notice it.

I think for a 10k you might be better off just holding the phone the whole time.

I purchased one of those armband cases at the expo to hold my iphone. I am very happy with it.

I use an ArmPocket arm holder, which zips and my phone (GS3) slides out pretty easily - getting it back in is usually a bit more effort than taking it out, though not significantly. I'm not sure how the neoprene pockets compare, but I wouldn't think it would slow you down so much that it will be worth spending more money on something with its own set of drawbacks.

I had my iphone with me for all the races at marathon weekend, and I noticed a couple of things:

1) it was generally much, much easier to just carry the thing, rather than try to get it out of the neoprene armband, take the pic, reinsert it into the armband, and then adjust the headphone jack if necessary.

2) My phone did not do a very good job of taking pictures in the dark. Some turned out okay, others were little better than dark screens. (Yes, it had a flash, but on several occasions, either the CM or I managed to turn it off.) For the half and full (I think), I carried a small camera as well, and stopped messing with iphone pics.

A Bit Spendy, but take a look at the life proof case, with the life proof armband. It works perfectly. A little uncomfortable on the arm, but snaps in and out in a second.

I run with the Nathan Shadow Pak. It holds my iPhone, car key, chapstick, and a couple gels comfortably. Of course, the less you cram in there the faster/easier it is to get your phone in and out, but it's never given me any trouble.

I run with a Flipbelt and really like to hold my phone and beans etc. Fairly easy to get the phone in and out of on the go...I used it for the Disney Half last month. I used to use the Armpocket which was great too, but I find the flipbelt easier to use and I don't even notice it on while running, it's pretty comfortable.

I used to always run holding my phone so I could check on pace and things. I have had this for over a year now and have used it for three half marathons a a couple of 10k's and I love it http://www.hbtune.com/

You would have to remove the phone every time you want to take a picture- it's a velcro thing. I'm debating about if I want to just cut a hole in it for the Princess, but honestly for the Tinker Bell half it wasn't a big deal to take it out while waiting in line for character pics

everyone has their own preference, but I've tried various methods to carry my iPhone, here are my impressions, plus I'll tell you what I use now...

Armband -- too cumbersome, have to reach over to change or stop/start music, etc, that is, IF you are using the iphone for music or a mapmyrun app or whatever. also it just felt weird on my arm.

Belt -- not too bad. i've used the nathan belt, my wife uses an amphibod belt, both work pretty well. bouncing can be an issue, as well as "riding" up or down your body, depending on your body type.

Amphipod pocket/pouch -- not bad at all. i used this for the longest time, my model had a pretty good sturdy clip, and my model had a mesh outside pocket that my phone fit in nicely. a bit heavy though.

RooSport -- MY FAVORITE. and what I use now. :thumbsup2 it's lightweight, the newer model is more water/sweatproof, and larger. clips on your shorts using magnets. works very well for me. I used this for the 2014 Goofy Challenge as well. and they had a table at the Expo. downside is that the velcro doesn't last too long, and if you need to change the music you still have to take out your phone, unless you have remote headphones.

so try em out, again personally I liked the roosport. enjoy!

RaceReady shorts to carry stuff
But I'd just hold the thing in my hand ... with the caveats that a camera will work better for taking pictures in the dark and that touch screen phones can be infuriating when you're sweating

My phone fits perfectly under my wrist sweat band, I happen to use a Nike band, it holds the phone snug to my arm & is the exact length of my phone! I am relieved of ever concerning myself again with the depth & location (or even existence) of pockets in my workout clothes
