How to call in sick?

I'm not feeling well. Just run down, edge of a migraine (took something). Work has been stressful.

I have "a million" sick days. We accrue them and won't get paid out for not using them. I haven't taken a sick day since I started nearly a year ago. I haven't even had the urge to take a sick day till now. I know I SHOULD take the day off, sleep in...

I have the phone in my hand but I can't make the phone calls! I don't know what to say on the answering machine. I have to make 3 calls to 3 different people (ugh)

What do you say in your "I'm sick" message?

"Hello, this is Jane Doe, I work 8-5 in the BLANK department. I won't be in tomorrow because I have a migraine."

I know some places, you just have to say you are sick, but we have to give a reason. If you don't have to give the reason, then just say you are sick.

And migraines are terrible. I hope you feel better soon.

It's that easy??? :lmao:

I'm strongly considering just sucking it up and going in tomorrow just so I don't have to make the phone calls! :rolleyes1

Noo! Stay home and take care of yourself! An answering machine is much better than having to talk to somebody. Just call in and explain that you have an awful migraine! Feel better!

Yes, it's that easy! :thumbsup2

Goodness, you have the time, and you can't take it with you, so to speak, so USE IT!! Especially since you are truly sick!

If I'm sick I call our COO and just say "Hey Joe, I'm sick and won't be in". If I knew the night before and it wasn't too late I'd just call him at home or call his cell and let him know. If your sick do your coworkers and yourself a favor and stay home and get better. Good luck, it really is that simple.

See, wasn't that easy?

I just text my boss and tell him I'm ill. Easy-peasy!

I know how you feel. I am exactly the same. I have been to work on a few occasions when I shouldn't have been there siimply because I couldn't bring myself to make the call. The person who I have to ring or text at present is pretty good, but the boss several years ago was sooo imitidating and after saying "hi, its bla bla here, I won't be able to come in today as I have a migraine or my kid is vomitting ", there would then be this really awkard silence where he'd then say nothing.

I had the day off today as DD is unwell and DH stayed home with her yesterday and we realised last night that she wasn't going to be better by morning. I sent my boss a text message which is way easier but I always still beel so quilty. I'm not sure why because it's always been for a genuine reason. :confused3

I just call and say I am calling off sick-- they are not permitted to ask us what is wrong with us, thats between you and your Dr!

I feel the same way sometimes. I hate HATE calling in sick. So many people depend on me that when I do call in sick they have to all rearrange their schedules to accommodate....I have been very sick lately but I have been going to work and just leaving when I am done....I know how you feel with having a migraine I suffer from chronic headaches, so I am glad you called and are going back to bed. I hope you feel better soon!

Man, I would love to work where you do! A "million" sick days after almost a year, wow!

I know it's supposed to be simple, but some managers do not make it easy. I would deliberately try to avoid business hours when calling this one because he would grill me, tell me I sounded fine, and lay on the guilt about how much work had to be done. Finally he would say, "well..... okay I guess...." :headache:

Anywho, enough ranting from me - feel better soon!

I've never heard of a job where you are "entitled" to sick days!
Comparing different employees sickness records was always one of the ways you would use to help determine who to let go in a "Reduction In Force" process.

We're entitled to sick days and the use or non-use of them are never considered in lay-offs. We even get a lecture by HR to use them and don't forget them.

I hate calling in sick also. Where I work, calling in sick may make us short staffed, and no one wants to work short handed. I'm currently dealing with a kidney stone issue that I hope allows me to make it through the next 3 nights, because we are already short staffed.

I have one employee who's a **** that can barely do the job, but he's here every day including when he's sick spreading his germs around. I have another employee who calls in sick occasionally but can always be counted on to do a great job no matter what.

Guess who's going in case there is a "Reduction In Force" process? Hint: it ain't the 'face time' guy.

Blanket metrics like the "sick time" one mentioned above pretty much guarantee that you'll get stuck with unproductive employees one way or another. Those who invest in them get what they deserve, though.
