Hi folks,

Just wondering if any parents out here have any ideas for my 6 year old son to break his habit.

He always squeezes his lips with his fingers and it looks terrible. He does it while he's watching TV, computer games, in the car, etc.

Thanks.

Glad to hear someone else has the same problem. I use to pull at my lip when reading or studying. Did it for years. That is until I had stitches in my lip from surgery. I pulled at it 1 time and that was it!:rotfl2: I still don't pull my lip and that was 6 years ago.

OK so that may not work for you. But if you come up with a solution please share. My husband pulls at his hair. He didn't believe me about going bald. He does now:rotfl:

How about getting him those squeeze stressballs.
My son picks his nails and the skin around his nails. Looks like he's trying to remove his fingerprints he picks so much!!

I broke my habit of thumbsucking by falling off my bike and breaking my arm. Couldn't reach my thumb. After the cast came off, it wasn't the same.

buy my DD was always wringing her hands. It really looked bad when she was talking to someone else, or on stage for a show or something. Instead of constantly reminding her in front of others, we made a signal. (I touch my nose.) Since she doesn't realize she is doing it, she will see me and then stop, and she's not embarrassed. I find myself doing it a lot less now.

I like the stress ball thing too..

My DD's Occupational Therapist told me, DD was playing with her mouth that it was a way of organizing her brain. So to get her to stop whenever she started I gave her gum. Got a list of things to get that chewing movement in. Pretzels, apples, gummy bears ect. You might want to try the gum.

My daughter (age six) picked/bit her lower lip as well. Of course I tried the "don't touch your lip" times a thousand. Then I started putting Blistix on her lip. She must have really disliked the Blistix (she said it hurt) because I only put it on a couple of times and she stopped. Call me a meanie but her lips are healthy & beautiful.:bitelip: :woohoo:

Some acidy foods made my daughter have tingling in her lips and she played with them. I cut back to low acid orange jucie and watch the things that were highly seasoned and she stopped. I also used a vanillas skinny stick of Blistix moiturizer. Just putting something on the lips helped.

Now it is nibbling on the finger nails. That is part of stress. She has some nail polish and remover so she will like her nails with tips. She will hopefully feel pretty too. She is going on 13. She even tried pretty applied nails,, I knew they would be off in minutes..... :confused3
