My DS is taking an online course and he will spend hours on the computer doing 20 minutes of work. I know he is surfing while he is supposed to be working so I want to put some kind of nanny software on that will only allow him to access his online class (so *I* can get on for a change, darn it!). Any ideas? I googled this and while there seems to be a lot of need for this type of program I can't find one.

How old is your son? And why go to all this trouble? Just change the password and sign him on and set a timer. When it goes off he's done with the computer and it's your turn. If he wastes his time he pays the consequence.

I would recommend the NetNanny software. My husband works in IT and used to work at a computer repair shop. He used to deal with many customers that would need restrictions for younger kids. The NetNanny program (www.netnanny.com) is cheap, and will filter out any bad websites, including any you want filtered. If your son is working on homework but needs access to an additional website, you just have to enter a password to unlock it. It's very simple to use and made for people who don't have a ton of experience with computers.

Hope this helps!

Why don't you just tell your DS that he has until what ever time to finish his class and he is then off the computer? :confused3 Why do you need software to do that for you?

Do you have Windows Vista? If you do, you can set his account to only block or allow listed websites. We have two accounts for DS, one for schoolwork only and the other for playtime; we set them up with different time limits.

Do make sure that you don't have games on the machine that he can get to. If he can't surf, he can still play solitaire if he's bored enough.

How old is your son? Our granddaughters 9 & 11 are only allowed on the computer while sitting at the kitchen table. It allows their parents to keep an eye on what they are doing and discourages them from straying from what they are supposed to be doing.
