How to avoid parking fee when buying annual pass?

How can I avoid paying for parking when I go to purchase my annual pass? I see parking is free at Universal after 6 PM. Is that the only way to avoid the first time parking fee by going after 6 PM to activate the pass? I am buying the pass that includes parking.

Yes, that's the only way to go about it; otherwise you'll end up paying for parking the first time you use it.

If someone goes with you, they can drop you off while you go into CityWalk. That is what we did. I got the passes, while DH drove to 7-11 to kill time.

Great idea but unfortunately I will be with my minor kids. We will go after 6pm for the free parking on the first day.
