we just moved into our new house and found out the hard way that the wooden mantel is not attached to the actual fireplace (lost a beautiful glass hurricane. sigh.). Is it possible to attach it? How would we do this? we would like to be able to decorate, hang stockings, etc.

Normally you screw plates to the back of the mantelpiece. These plates stick out each side with a screwhole in them (like mirror plates) so you screw through them into the wall. If you cannot plaster over to hide them, use brass plates and screws and leave them on show.
