Our new use year arrives tomorrow, and I've been waiting for the points so I could book a room for later in August. Will the points be available to use tomorrow morning with online booking or will I have to call MS?

You don't have to wait for the UY to begin to book. You can always book at your home resort beginning 11 months from arrival and at non-home resorts beginning at 7 months from arrival. Except VGF which non-owners can book beginning at 4 months from arrival for 2013 arrival dates, normal 7 month window for 2014 arrival dates.

You don't need to wait for the use year to begin to use points that will be available during the use year. You can make your reservations 11 months out for your home resort and 7 months out for non-home resorts.

For example, you have an august use year and want to vacation in August 2014 at your home resort. You are going to receive your allotment of that use years points on August 1, 2014. You can make those reservations the prior September (2013, 11 months out) and use the points that will come available on August 1, 2104.

Hope that makes sense.

I could be totally wrong, but I think they are in a borrowing mode and want to know if their 2014 will be available to borrow tomorrow morning online when the system switches over at 8am. They want to borrow from 2014 to book an August 2013 trip. OP, if that is your question, they should be online and available tomorrow morning.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but even in borrowing mode it only matters when the vacation is scheduled, not when it is booked. If the points would be available to borrow at the time of the trip, you can book at the regular 11/7 months out. That is how people can bank/borrow to use 3 years worth of points at 11 months out. Right?

Yes! Thank you :-)

With an August use year, today it should show 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 use years. Tomorrow it should show 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016. So those points are available for booking based on date of stay. For a stay in late August 2013, you could borrow 2014, you could do it today.

this is correct. boiseflyfisher is mistaken.

Everything is based on when you travel NOT when you book. So, if you want to book an August 2013 trip, you could have booked it last September and used banked 2012, 2013, and borrowed 2014 points to reserve.

What made it easy for me when I first started was just write down the UY the trip would take place and then I knew I could pay with banked from the UY before travel, the UY of travel, and borrow from the after travel.

As long as I had points in those UYs to cover, then I knew I would be set whenever I called to book.

And now we can confuse the masses and teach them how to use 4 years worth of points by booking through 2 UY's.:rotfl2:

Confuse me, please. I would like to understand this beyond my initial guess after reading your post.

Try to keep track of a Dec UY. We travel in Late Nov to early Dec so we are in two UYs!

Here is an actual example:

It's December 30, 2012 when I booked our 11/30/2013 to 12/7/2013 trip - 2BR at BLT. We have March UY with 200 points and BLT is our home resort so I can book any villa there as early as 11 months ahead. I need 298 points to book my reservation.

My points at the time I made the reservation are:

2012 - 0 left
2013 - 126 points left. We already borrowed some when we rented our points.
2014 - 200 points left.

So, I used all 126 points from 2013 allotment and borrowed 172 points from 2014 allotment.

See, I didn't have to wait to be in the actual UY to book. Just the trip you are booking. If Ihad to wait for 2014 UY then our trip would be over so what's the point of 11 month priority booking then.

When you do this now and have not enough points the online system will know that it needs to borrow points and there will be a prompt asking you to confirm the borrowing.

I hope this helps!

As long as your trip dates span your Use Year you can use 4 years of points for one trip.

If you have a June Use Year and have a trip planned for May 25 - June 5, 2014 you could use points banked from your June, 2012 Use Year, points from the current June, 2013 Use Year, and points borrowed from the June, 2014 Use Year for the dates from May 25 - May 31. The dates June 1 - June 5 could be reserved using points banked from the June, 2013 Use Year, points current from the June, 2014 Use Year, and points borrowed from the June, 2015 Use Year.

Since this example is for a stay of more than 7 nights, it can be reserved using two calls to MS ... or reserve the first 7 nights online and add the additional nights with one phone call to MS who will link everything together.

Enjoy! :)

BUT keep in mind that in order to use 4 UY's of pts for one trip, part of the trip needs to be at the end of a UY...which can be risky if you need to cancel.

if doc needed to cancel his imaginary plans in march or april 2014, he'd be scrambling to find a way to rent his reservation or risk losing all of the pts used to book the may 2014 dates.

First, be aware that the reservation system will be down on Aug 6 until about 4 p.m. Eastern. If you are talking aout having just purchased new points, then as to whether those new points will be immediately shown on-line for use or instead you will need to call, I am not sure of the answer. When buying new points from Disney you can use them as soon as you buy them when calling MS but I don't know how fast they actually get them put into the on-line system for use if booking on-line. I would assume very fast but with system down, you will probably not be able to determine that fact until after four Aug 6.

If you are talking about your contract/use year that you already had with an Aug use year, then you oils have reserved at your home resort 11 months out, 7 at others and did not have to wait for use year to actually begin before making the reservation.

All points for the current and future years are all ready in the system. So if you could book something 10 years out today, you could bank 2022 points, borrow 2024 point and use 2023 point immediately.

I must say that I had the same misconception as the OP when I started using DVC 20+ years ago.
