How soon can I sell points?

Hi, we are thinking of buying 225 points at AKV to get the extra free 160 points and then selling the the extra 65 points.

1. How soon can I sell points after our contract is in place?
2. Can we sell some of our points, or do you have to sell your entire contract at once?

Thanks
Dennis

Points cannot be broken up and sold. You can only sell them in the same increment you bought them in.

If you want to sell 65 of the 225 points, you will need to purchase a 160 and 65 point contract. If you purchase a 225 point contract, you will have to sell the entire 225 points at one time. You can't break up a contract and sell only a portion of the points. The 160 is just a one time use.

When you sell the 65 point contract, you will have to pay real estate fees that include the reseller's commission, usually 10-12% of the entire price. A 65 point contract should be easier to sell than a 160 point contract. Lots of people like those smaller contracts. You could even purchase the extra 65 points as two contracts, 30 and 35 points. (I think you can still finance through Disney with those lower contracts).

Ok, thanks for the information. I wonder if i buy 2 contracts like that if they will give me the extra 160 points? I figured the 65 point contract would be easy to sell for AKV.

Remember, though, you won;t be "selling" for the same price you purchased the points at through Disney, then add in the resellers fees and it might just be cheaper to pay cash for the vacation you want to use those 160 points on than the loss you'll take on the 65 points.

I must be missing something here. Why would you buy and then turn right around and sell at what will likely be a loss????

Yes, they would likely consider the two contracts as one to qualify for the promotion. Buying several contracts of say 100 points each gives you more flexibility to gift or sell later.

As to your original question you can sell after the deeds have been recorded.

But I agree with others who caution you to deliberate a bit more on what you are proposing. I see your strategy as more likely to cost you money then earn you a benefit.

Well if I buy 225 points, I get the $8 a point off and the free 160 points. I figured I could get at least $96 a point for a 65 point contract since there are not many small contracts out there for AKV. Especially since it would be a loaded contract. I didn't take into account the timeshare store fees for selling the contract. So it probably does not make sense to do what I was thinking. That's why the dis is so great, makes me think of things I didn't think about.

Remember that the cost to own is different from and more important than the cost to buy. Over the years the total paid in maintenance fees and trading fees (if you use your membership in that way) easily outstrips the initial cost.

Think about how you will use your membership. If it is to stay on property at DVC resorts then you are likely to receive a significant value. If it is to trade regularly for anything outside the on property DVC resorts you are probably better off with an alternative strategy.

Once you determine the likely use of the membership, buy based on what is most important to you -- location, theme, value, etc.

Good luck!!

NO THEY WILL NOT!! At least that's what I was told when we just purchased. I wanted to split up my points in two contracts so each contract could go to my two children (when we're dead and buried of course) and was told it had to be one full contact for the bonus points.

How many points did you buy? In the past they let people split them as long as one of the contracts met the 160-pt minimim. For example if you were buying 200 points they would split them as 160/40 but not 100/100.

If you buy as a new member you must buy at least 160 in a single contract. If you were a member already, you could buy multiple contracts that totaled the amount required for the promotion, 160 in this case. I too don't think it reasonable to buy and then turn around and sell, too much hassle and too many costs to make it worthwhile. One could buy a small resale contract then add on through DVC thus removing the 160 pt minimum to purchase but you would not get most incentives with that approach.

Am I missing something here? There's a promotion that gives "free points" with a minimum purchase? Points that are good for the entire life of the resort (50 years in AKV's case)? Or are these the developer points? Which is just one year's worth of points...

If it's the developer points, you wouldn't sell your points, you'd sell a reservation you made with them...

ANyway...I'm mightily confused by this...would you explain? If there's really a promotion that lets you add on 160 points to a 225 point contract at no cost, that is one INCREDIBLE deal!

I think OP is talking about the 160 developer points if you purchase a 225 point contract. They are only good for 1year from the date of purchase, so what I'm thinking is, OP wants to use 160 points for a trip and then sell the 225 point contract, therefore ending up with a free stay (if he breaks even on the sale of the contract).

Am I correct in this assumption?

Hi guys, I'm new to this (rented for a couple of years and just bought over our Thanksgiving vacation) . I think my sitution is becaue of what Dean said...new members. We have one contract for 250 points. But now maybe I'm confusing MYSELF!!!!

I wanted to split it up 125 and 125 for each child and he said no because it wasn't the minimum of 160 points, we needed to purchase 160 and 160 at this time if we were going to split... then he also said it was the same situation for the 160 "bonus" (what he kept calling them) points.

Does this sound right or did I completely misunderstand.

If you wanted to have two identical contracts for your children later on, that's what you would have had to do. However, you could have gotten one contract of 160 and one of 90 and add 70 on at a later date to make up the points that were missing. But for a first time buyer, you must purchase at least one contract of 160 points.

The "bonus points" are a one time offering of developer points that can only be used at the 7 month booking window. That means you would want to bank your current points and use those "bonus points" first or "rent them out" to someone whom you make a reservation for. Those points are only there for that one time, and they can not be banked, so it's use 'em or lose 'em. There's really nothing to sell. You CAN rent them out though.

It sounds right. As I posted above, since you are a non-member your first contract must be at least 160 points. Since you wanted 250 points total, you could do as Deb & Bill said and purchase one 160-pt contract and one 90-point contract but you cannot purchase two 125-pt contracts. A member who is adding on 250 points could purchase two 125-pt contracts however.

I think I'm confusing everyone from what the OP was originally asking. Sorry!! We started talking about me splitting it up for my kids and I got the conversation going in a different direction than what the OP wanted to go. Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I absolutely understood that the 160 bonus points expired one year from the date of purchase...however, I did not understand that you could only use them at the 7 month booking window. Am I understanding now correctly, that you can't use those 160 points at the 11 month window? That is certainly not the way it was presented to us. Please help clarify.

They cannot be used at the 11-month window because they are "generic" points that have no home resort.
