An Ashwaubenon manicurist charged last week with trying to sell his daughter for $7,000 in Grand Chute is now charged in Brown County Court with having offered the girl up for $10,000 a week earlier to one of his nail customers in Ashwaubenon.
Danny Vu, 37, 1130 Schauer Lane, appeared Wednesday afternoon in Brown County Circuit Court to face a felony charge of soliciting an unauthorized adoption-for-money. The charge carries a possible penalty of six years in prison.
He appeared in court via teleconference from the Brown County Jail. The balance of his initial appearance was scheduled for today so that he can be provided with a Vietnamese translator.
Vu faces a similar charge in Outagamie County, where investigators say he offered his 18-month-old daughter for adoption to a Grand Chute couple for $7,000, apparently for the purpose of paying for some home improvements.
He allegedly was on his way to Grand Chute to deliver the child April 19 when he was arrested. He was charged Friday and is being held in that case in lieu of a $10,000 cash bond. He is awaiting a preliminary hearing in that case.
In the Brown County criminal complaint a woman told police she went to Vu for a manicure on April 14 at California Nails in Ashwaubenon on the recommendation of a friend.
As Vu was doing her nails, he asked her several questions about her personal life, and, when she told him that she and her husband were looking to adopt a child, Vu offered to sell his little girl to her for $10,000, the complaint says.
Vu allegedly told her that his daughter "was very cute and she would make a great daughter," the complaint says.
The woman said that although the conversation made her uncomfortable, she assumed Vu was joking, the complaint says. She told Vu she and her husband preferred to do their adoption legally, and Vu said he would sign papers and do everything required, the complaint says. He offered to arrange a meeting with his daughter, but the woman left without making any such arrangement, the complaint says.
When she left, she contacted the friend who had recommended Vu and told her Vu "had done a great job on her nails and that he had offered to sell her his child," the complaint says. The two laughed about it, and the woman put it out of her mind until a week later, when she learned the news of Vu's arrest in Grand Chute.
She then contacted police.
At a news conference Friday, Grand Chute Police Chief Ed Kopp said Vu's daughter showed no signs of physical abuse. The girl was in the custody of the Brown County Child Protection agency.
Kopp said the girl would likely be placed in temporary foster care.
Since his arrest April 19, Vu remained in the Outagamie County Jail until being transferred Tuesday to the Brown County Jail to face a charge here.
Authorities said the Grand Chute case was solved with the help of the Grand Chute couple that Vu approached to buy the baby.
"The couple has been extremely cooperative," said Outagamie County District Attorney Carrie Schneider. The child is doing very well, Schneider said.
