How sick would your kids need to be to cancel

I cannot believe that my 4 year old daughter came down with the latest virus around. She's not been sick in a long time!! She just has a sore throat, fever and headache. The pediatrician said it lasts about 4 or 5 days. We are on day 2, so she should be good to go by next wedneday when we leave. I'm more worried about one of the rest of us catching it and having it for a short period of time next week. I'm thinking we go ahead and go! I do have trip insurance, but we've planned for so long!

Just be sure to use plenty of hand sanitizer and wash wash those hands! ;) I think you will be fine. Hope you have a great time!

We just went through this in Jan. 7DD came down with the flu and then a case a strep right after that. She was on antibiotics for 2 days when we left for US/IOA. My mother was furious that we didn't cancel the trip. However DD felt fine and was as active as usual. DS and I did get a mild case of the flu, but were luckily over it.

Oh, I hear you!! My dd started those same symptoms today but then started vomiting as well. We leave on the 11th. I swear there is a black cloud over our house... last year she got sick days before we left and my ds broke his arm. This is the last time I will vacation in June!! It seems to be bad luck for us!
Good luck to you!

I would go ahead and get an antibiotic RX from your DR. My daughter who has not been sick in over a year just had that "virus" and ran fever of 100 - 104 for 5 days, did not get better until the 2nd Dr visit and started on Antibiotics.

I work in a medical facility and don't ecourage the over-use of ABX. However, if the child doesn't get sick that often - I would have no problem asking for RX just in your case. Explain the situation to the doc and they will likely give you an rx.
Don't forget OTC meds too, they often can relieve child's symtoms. Fevers really make kid's feel rotten. Relieve the fever and chances are they will perk up.
p.s. Keep washing those hands and don't contaminate the rest of the family.
Good Luck and do what's right for you.

Along with hand washing, wipe down all the "touchable" surfaces in the house with bleach (doorknobs, light switches, phones, computer mouse, fridge handle, sink faucets) to cut down on the germ factor. Our "annual" trip to WDW has been in January.... talk about being afraid someone will get sick... but (knock on wood) we have been lucky so far. Last year someone in DS's kindergarten class vomited EVERYWHERE 3 days before we left! I was so afraid he would catch it! ICK......P

Last year, we had planned to go to WDW in March. A couple of days before the trip, our DD (2 -1/2 at the time) caught the Norwalk virus and ended up dehydrated. She ended up in the hospital for 5 days on IV fluids the night before we were to leave for our trip. We ended up postponing our trip until October. And hoped that she did not get really sick before hand (she has severe asthma and has been hospitalized 4 times in the past year and a half.)

We left home one time with my DD throwing up......we were driving down and we had to stop fairly often for her to be sick :guilty:

But, I knew it was a virus and I knew it would pass within 24 hours :umbrella: So I knew by the time we got going in the parks she would be fine....and she was! :goodvibes

As an aside: she always seemed to get sick on our 3rd day at WDW! I used to joke that she was on a "puke around the world" tour. On different trips she had been sick at AK, MK & EPCOT.

Finally, I read on these boards that some people cannot tolerate the FL water. Since then, I do not let her drink any WDW water - bottled water ONLY! She hasn't been sick at WDW since! :cloud9: I can't prove anything....I just know I'm not messing with success.

I would go! My kids have had every illness in the book this past school year and some of them have been passed back and forth between our family and some have not. Just take precautions with you (cold medicine, etc.) and if someone does get sick, be prepared to send part of the family to the parks one day while the one not feeling well rests at the resort.

And remember if there truly ARE sick while you are there, please stay in the room and away from others until they are better. Not fair to share your illness with everyone else on vacation. We were in line to open the MK one morning with a family that had a boy about 8 that looked horrible. He kept saying he did not feel well. Mom told him to hush. He told her he was going to be sick and mom said hush. He WAS sick all over the place and just misses us! Dad took him to the side for a few minutes but he was back before the gates open still looking horrible! We all just held our breath!! The worst was when we go through the gates they have AP's so it was NOT a once in a lifetime day!
Also remember that WDW is full of MAW kids that have poor immune system and being around a sick kid could be very dangerous!!

My thought has always been that if my kid has fever for more than two days  , should be in antibiotics, and once he starts the treatment should take no more than two days to stop the fever and feel a lot better. So I suggest you to give her antibiotics and take it slow, if she needs to rest let her, and take the stroller and lot of fluids. But obviously the best advice you can get is the pediatrician's advice.

Good Luck!!

We had this happen when we went. 2 days before we left, my dd got a really high fever (kept getting up to 104). No other real symptoms. Took her to the doctor and they went ahead and put her on a 5 day Zithromax since they knew we were getting ready to leave. The next morning she was doing really well and by the time we left she was back to herself.

Thank you Jordan's Mom! My nearly 4 year old son gets extremely ill with only a slight ear infection. It will make him have at least 3 grand mal seizures per day! Other illness can really make a mess of him! He has 5 seizure types & can have over 100's of seizures per day. They leave him unable to walk & talk.....PLEASE if anyone has a sick child, do NOT expose others, as it is critical to their health! Remember that anyone with a fever is contagious 24 hours AFTER the fever is gone.

I'm sorry those pesky virsuses are chasing after your darling kiddos. It is quite upsetting to postpone or change plan when you are so excited, but please, lets contain the germs! Some children's lives depend on it...

My DD had something similar to that a couple of weeks ago. Her's passed pretty quickly (five days in duration), but about ten days later, guess who came down with it ; ) So most important, take care of DD, but also take care of yourself - get extra sleep, drink lots of fluids, and handwashing is important. You don't want anyone else in the family getting it because that could affect your vacation.

This is probably contrary to all scientific evidence , but as a mother of 3 my own experience has shown that the more I try to keep things sanitized the more likely the whole family is to get sick.

Time and again one of the kids has come down with whatever is going around at that time and it's usually around a vacation or holiday and I frantically start wiping down with bleach, lysol, washing hands every 30 minutes, etc and inevitably we all get it. The times when I do nothing and just let nature take it's course (with a reasonable amount of hand washing of course) , no one else gets sick. Don't know if it's coincendence or what, but it has happened every time for the past 12 years.

If you are traveling by plane, even if she is ok, check with you ped or pharmacist on how to relieve ear pressure. Even when my kids are well, I have to monitor there ears or we have trouble!

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

We leave in 2 days and DD was sent home from school today with a fever and upset stomach. Hopefully its only a short-lived bug.

Well said and THANK YOU! :)

Not just MAW kids but other kids with poor immune systems!!

My DD, 10 months, was born with heart defects and no spleen. We are very careful about antibacterial lotion, washing our hands, etc but we can't protect her from airborne stuff.

I agree. I think parents should also think about whom else their kids might be sharing those viruses with when they take them out in public sick. Especially in a a small confined space like airplanes. My DD 18months had the worst winter, if someone sneezed in the same building she was in she got sick....It was aweful, there's nothing worse than seeing your own children sick.
