How sick have YOU been and still run a race?

my aunt ran in 2012 with a cold. we were at The Other Park the day before, and i swear it's windier and colder over there. anyways. she did the 5k as well that day and just deteriorated after that. she spent most of her race back with the balloon ladies but made it through.

then somehow, our positions reversed. i spent the rest of the day in bed with all the blankets on shivering and she was out and about with the rest of our family!

As an update.....

I started and finished. I can't say it was fun though!

It's possible that I had the worst attitude anyone has ever had at a Disney race. I don't think I smiled once. Everyone was too loud, there were too many spectators, and people above 6' really have to watch their elbow swings as they pass people. I nearly lost my cheekbones to such elbows!

I had a whole long litany of complaints and whines and annoyances. Especially towards the spectator who said something like "if you can smile you can finish!" Way early in the race. Ha. Proved that wrong. I had to keep my feet moving. My mouth had little to do with it. But that's the only one I will mention. It's just that that sort of "meant to be positive" comment can actually be negative to someone in a different headspace. But I've been getting told to smile since I grew into my adult face, and it's been an old "order" for a long time.

The song Roar saved my skin just like Born This Way during the TOT did. And for my short legs it was a perfect fast get me moving pace that I kept going back to.

The day before the race, my son started getting sick. So I felt bad about leaving him but it allowed me to have the very first experience of allowing a trusted family member to care for him. Worked out just fine and I'm so thankful my aunt.

I drank every last bit of water in my Nathan Intensity pack along with my bottle of electrolyte powder. Along with my shot bloks. Part of the sickness was an inability to eat so I went into this worried about nutrition but it went ok.

I had signed up for the 3 hour pace team so I suppose that was my estimate. I wore the band but didn't bother to find the pace person. The band above everything else gave me the most positivity than anything else because I didn't have to do math. I finished in 3:11 which is really excellent given my health and nutrition and attitude. I'm still dealing with the food thing and am woozy and spacey and i am still coughing and nose-blowing (that part thankfully wasn't needed while running!) but I know as I come all the way out of this I will be even more appreciative of the time.

I'm not sure the Retreat is worth all that they charge, but it's worth nearly that! The short bathroom line was brilliant. After, getting some muffins and eggs so fast, along with coffee, changed everything I thought I knew about how I recover. I didn't end up in the full body shiver like usual. I've had almost no aches and pains. Today my body feels great. I can't believe I ran that distance yesterday.

I met a few super sweet people there and had a fun talk with a volunteer on the way to the buses, and met a nice person on the bus. My voice is very messed up but it was worth it to talk to them. :)

Wearing my Donald shirt today and thinking of going to Sweet Tomatoes for some food!

Congrats on finishing! I know JUST what you mean about people telling you to smile lol. Did it seem like many people got swept?

After cheering from the first wheelchair to the sweeper bike at the stadium, we definitely made a beeline for Sweet Tomatoes! Congratulations!!

Same here. I'm not big on smiling, even when I'm happy, and I hate being told to do so because someone expects it. It doesn't matter if you're a family member, friend, or somebody I'm encountering at work (I work retail, so I've heard a lot of passive-aggressive remarks about the state of the corners of my mouth from rude customers), NOBODY gets to tell me what to do with MY face on MY body, thank you very much. Not sure how civilized my response would be if someone told me this during a race, especially if I wasn't feeling well.

Enjoy your meal at Sweet Tomatoes! It's my favorite buffet and it tastes twice as good after a race.

I know nothing. I was in the retreat until about 10:45 and the TVs were showing he finish line with people continuing to come in, some walking.

That's a long morning but thank you. I was surly about the noise of spectators yesterday (part of this sickness involves extra sensitive hearing and the clappers and cowbells and the people doing a NY taxi whistle under the waterbridge made me hurt and dizzy each time) but I know that part wasn't their fault. :)

Alas it was halfway taste free thanks to my messed up tastebuds but at least I have calories onboard.

I'm so glad Clare Danes brought the "smile!" thing to the worlds attention recently.

The spectator was saying it to the man next to me and she meant nothing but encouragement, but obviously it can also have negative connotations to others. Hope she somehow realizes this.

Th other vent I had that I think is justified is how marginalized they made those of us not doing a challenge feel. They gave lip service to us but when you give ten sentences to a challenge and half a sentence to the individual race, you are speaking loudly.

I did a 5k and a half when sick and took my son to his other race and kept us alive and moved hotels and I think that was a challenge worth a medal. Maybe I'll have DH make one up for me. :)
