How school impacts travel plans, with Older Kids?

We too have dealt with this and adjusted our plans, since we always go during Feb break. We usually fly out on Wed eve. taking kids out of school for 2 days and fly back on Friday or Saturday which does decrease the airfare a bit (leaving early). Now we have 2 in college that still want to come so they fly out with us and come home on President day while we finish out the week. I prefer the weather in Feb. vs. summer. In 16 years we had only 2 years that were COLD, the rest of the years were perfect! We have found the parks are busy Sat - Monday of President weekend so we use those days to hang out at the resort.

My kids arent old enough yet for this to be an issue for me, but eventually it will be! We live in NE also and have the Feb and April breaks. Many of my co-workers tend to fly on Thursday before school vacation week instead of waiting until Fri/Sat/Sun.....it costs a bit less in airfare..also book airfare early - its likely not coming down!

This year, the Feb vacation for my state was not the busiest week in Disney - going the Monday of the vacation week through the following monday would have lead to comfortable crowds, good weather, and reasonable airfare!

Not sure if you will be ready to go so soon in 2012 after your December cruise, but its something to think about! Maybe even reason to upgrade to an annual pass :thumbsup2

When our kids were in elementary school we would pull them out for a week with the understanding that all work missed had to be made up and there was usually an assignment specific to our trip given by the teacher. Now that they are in middle school we started going during MLK week which in our schedule means they only miss 2 days of school. With DD starting high school next year and the block scheduling there is no way we can pull her for a week or even a couple of days due to the amount of work she will miss. I am really dreading having to join the thousands of others tied to the school schedule but it is what it is.Our days traveling to the world as a family with children that still see all the magic is coming to an end. Sad to think about in those terms but whatever you decide to do it will be right for your family and the memories are magnificant.
