I'm just talking the dark dinosaur part here. My son loves water rides and we all like Splash Mountain but my girls (who are older) were terrified on their first DINOSAUR ride. The oldest wouldn't go ago and the middle has ridden twice but both times with her head down and eyes closed and she didn't want to do it last year. My son is a little scared of villains on screen rides so if Jurassic River is too scary we'll skip it but I'd like some sense of what others think first. Thanks!

For me, about as scary in terms of the dinosaurs. That being said, the anticipation of drop made the entire thing like 10000 times scarier for me (I hate drops) so that may have colored my entire perception.

The anticipation of the drop is a little nerve wracking for me as is the T-Rex but that is kinda why I really like the ride. It is about as scary as Dinosaur! to me.

In my opinion, neither are scary. They are both animatronics in a well-done attraction. The worst part about Dinosaur is the massive Carnotaur at the end....the worst part about Jurassic is how wet you get. :)

You didn't mention the ages of your kids, but it sounds like they are not ready for JP yet. I always called it a PG-13 ride. It is way better than a villain screen ride as all the effects are practical. The lighting is better than Dinosaur, and the volume is not as loud. It does make you feel in danger in a relatively small room with dinos around. But that only lasts for a few short minutes. It is really a lot of fun and one of my favorites because the first half is so docile and then it turns dark.

I don't think either are scary either...that's a very subjective question. What's not scary to me might be terrifying to someone else.

I watched Youtube of it and thought, "Whoa, that's a bit too scary for my 10 yr old daughter." But we got there, rode it and she loved it! She wanted to do it again! I think a lot of it has to do with your attitude and body language toward kiddos. It is nothing like the older, scarier version of Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom, man that thing terrified me!

The kids are 5, 7, and 9.

I hate watching rides on YouTube before I actually get to ride them but maybe I'll have to in this case.

I've never been on Dinosaur, but my 8 yo finds Jurassic Park very scary (large loud dinosaurs popping out of the dark) and won't ride. My 11 yo was scared the first time he rode (age 8) but I think he was just startled by the Trex because he tried again and has loved it ever since.

Weirdly my son is more scared of this ride at 9 than any other. Not to give away spoilers but when we go into the “inside part” he just closes his eyes and right before the drop I touch his arm to open them again. He loves the drop, but does not like the raptors on the fencing.

I have 3 boys. My youngest had ridden both rides by the age of 5 or 6. He did fine on both.

Jurassic Rive Ride is a way better ride to my kids than Dinosaur.

If the child is scared of dinosaurs, I think they will probably perceive the two rides as equally scary. I know when I was a child, it didn't matter to me, one dinosaur or ten. A dinosaur was scary and that was that.

However, there are a number of other aspects to the Dinosaur ride that may be the reason it is perceived as scary that have nothing to do with the dinosaurs. Dinosaur is dark, loud, moves faster, and is jerky. You also have the added storyline that an asteroid is going to hit and kill everyone. That alone might be scary enough. Then there is the not knowing what's ahead or around you because of the speed and darkness that can be scary. There is also a small drop at the end. As far as the dinosaurs themselves, the scary ones are large, in your face, and there are more of them, than there are in JP.

Jurassic Park on the other hand is half outside half inside, and though the inside is dark, it is still much better lit than Dinosaur. The large dinosaurs you see on the ride are all the friendly plant eating type. The scary man-eating dinosaurs are small raptors except for one T-Rex. The ride moves slower as you are in a boat. This could be a relief to some or scarier as you feel like there's no safe fast get away available. JP seems like it is more suspense driven scary. You see the damage the dinosaurs have done, you receive warnings of danger, but as far as big scary dinosaurs shoved in your face, not so much. Alot of the time, you don't even see any dinosaurs at all. There is also the long drop at the end to consider. Spoiler: There is one spot where a large box containing raptors comes down like it is going to fall on the boat and crush it. That could be scary.

I would say overall that Dinosaur is the scarier of the two because of the speed, darkness, number of large scary dinosaurs, loud noises, and the sense of impending doom.

Thank you for the detailed analysis. That's very helpful. Maybe I'll explain to middle child and we'll go on it first to see how it is.
