Hubby really wants to go. I love Harry Potter and Stranger Things, but I’m not a huge fan of horror movies or haunted houses. Will I be ok, or will I have nightmares for weeks?
Its not scary (as in terrifying) if you are an adult. You may get jump scared but that’s only really scary in the moment.
For anyone that has a real phobia it’s a good idea to check out YouTube for info on the house (spiders, things like that, etc) but no there is nothing that would give the average adult actual nightmares (imo).
ETA: You are going through the houses in huge conga lines, the mass of people (usually laughing at being scared) helps keep the mood light.
How are you for dark spaces with a lot of jump scares? The houses are going to be low level lighting, through various scenes, things are going to pop out at you. They like to do the trick of having you push through a bead curtain or plastic strips so you are distracted then someone pops out with a knife. They don’t actually touch you and you can’t touch them.
The scare zones are variously themed outside areas where you walk through and the scare actors may react to you.
Molly from Mammoth Club has a video from last year’s HHN media night on her YouTube channel where she goes through all the houses from last year. Since it was media preview, she could film inside the houses. So you get a good vibe of what you can expect.
I don't think you'll have nightmares but I found HHN INTENSE due to the adrenaline caused from the jump scares, loud noises, crowds, darkness, etc. I didn't realize how much I do not like walking through creepy places where things can jump out at me constantly. And there's no break. I wasn't aware of the scare zones. When I got out of the haunted house and thought I could relax for a moment, I was immediately scared again. If you go into it knowing all of that, you may be ok.
