How scary are the Dementors on FJ?

I am wondering how scary the Dementors are on the Forbidden Journey ride. The reason I ask is because I, not my kids, totally freaked out and had a major panic attack on Dinosaur at Disney! I dont know what came over me but I lost it, was screaming and crying, stamping my feet on the bottom of the car, and kept my head down. So because of this I am thinking I may freak again over the Dementors. Any feedback?

They are very cartoonish. Not scary at all. There are youtube videos if you want to check it out before you go.

I have the same reaction to Dinosaur. I hate the ride. I started going on it in high school and I still haven't seen the entire ride because I close my eyes once the scary stuff starts. I just don't like it.

I also closed my eyes during the Dementor part on FJ. You can tell they are coming, so I closed them for a part and then you moved on and I was fine.

Glad to know I am not the only one :)

The ones that aren't on the screen look like cheap carnival spookhouse props -- weakest part of the ride, IMO.

Not scary at all. In fact, as a Potter nerd the dementors were the biggest disappointment for me. They look like robes on a stick, pathetic really when they are supposed to be soul sucking demons.

I pretty much kept my eyes close for most of FJ. The first little bit is fine until a dragon is chasing you. You then go "inside" and there are spiders. Giant spiders and they spit on you. Eyes closed. They stayed closed until I heard something about Quiddich. And you're flying around with ghosts (maybe the dementors you're talking about?), not too scary. Then closed again for something else (can't remember what) and then open again when Harry says "We're almost back". Fun ride but I can't do scary images. Same for Mummy--eyes closed entire ride. BTW, my 6yo LOVED both rides.

Really? Lots seem to be souring on the dementors in the ride...

I love the ride and think it's such a thrill. And to me, one of the most thrilling aspects to the ride is going to each of the dementors as it whips you into them. One of the more fun parts of the ride in my opinion.

The dementors are fun but they are not very well done as far as effects go. I did love the effect they have of when the dementors are sucking out your soul and you see an image of your face being sucked out of you. But the actual physical dementors are very cheesy looking, like something out a local haunted house event. Kind of a skeleton on a stick covered in black fabric. They mostly made me giggle rather than fear for my soul.

LOL! at this point in the ride I was concentrating so hard not to be sick from all the moving around that I didn't get a really close look at the dementors! In their defence, they rather look like robes on sticks in the movies too (at least when seen from afar!) :rotfl:

I admire/envy those of you who can actually ride FJ and notice what is happening around them! :goodvibes

That is disappointing and strange, considering they probably spent 100 million on that ride. And especially with their ability to make world class props, wonder how they managed to drop the ball on this? :confused3 Maybe this was how JK Rowling wanted it.

Is this effect fixed? It was working when I was there in late August/early Sept, but was broken when I was there both in mid October and also in early Dec. Your faces no longer showed on the mist, just pictures of four dementers.:confused3

To OP: I agree with everyone else: the dementers were a disappointing part of the ride. They're really cheesy and not the least scary. The effect of seeing your face in the mist was cool though.

I agree that they are the cheesiest part of the ride, but they were a lot larger than i expected and they kind of get right in your face with a lot of fog, so it is a bit intimidating

^Exactly. For the first time riders, they are terrifying. There hasn't been one time where I've ridden with others and nobody screamed when that fist dementor popped out of the darkness.

I didnt scream at all, I immediately giggled. But I'm a full on Potter nerd, I know what a dementor is supposed to look like, and the ones of FJ just made me giggle. Of course, that might not be the reaction of most people.

That's a startle effect of something popping up at you -- not a confirmation that it's a terrifying creation. They are simply ridiculous looking, once you get past that "BOO!" reaction.

The weird thing is that a few different styles of dementors were used in the movies. The ones in Forbidden Journey resemble the ones in The Order of the Phoenix.

They look more like this:

The effect of seeing your own face in the mist was working in January.
