I've always wondered. The murky water in Pirates, small world, splash mountain, maelstrom, living on the land...is it cleansed? how? I've seen so many kids put their hands in the water (big no, no!) it makes me cringe. Think they just pour a bunch of bleach in everyday? It never smells like bleach/cleaner. Pirates water has a distinct smell like unother...a good smell...just different.

Got that answer on one of the backstage tours we went on earlier this month. The water is very clean. It is dyed to look like it is darker than it is. It is recycled through filters constantly. It has to be dyed a darker color to hide the bottom so the tracks and bottoms of things in the water don't show.

I think I read that about the water being dyed in the Imagineer's Guide as well. Very interesting pre-Disney read!!!

I have been looking for a "behind the scenes" type book, I can't wait to do the Keys to the Kingdom tour, need to wait till the kids get older. Can someone let me know about some good titles to find out the inside scoop?

I think you're fine as long as you don't drink it.:earsboy:

Someone on the Disneyland boards wrote that they distinctly remember a drop of water splashing into their eye when on Splash Mountain. Later that day, they developed a horrible eye infection that required medical help. Of course, he or she was flamed by other disers, as they didn't believe the OP. But, could be sadly true.

I was wondering the same thing when I got splashed in the eye with water on Splash Mountain! That was last week and my eye is fine. :)

When we were taking the Keys to the Kingdom tour, I asked about the smell of the water rides. (Sounds crazy, but I love that smell!) We were told it is treated with bromine. They use that instead of chlorine for a number of reasons:

*Bromine is more stable than chlorine in warm temperatures.
*Less people have allergic reactions to bromine.
*Bromine stays active after coming in contact with bacteria longer than chlorine.

(I got burning ASHES in my eye from the flipping fireworks shot off during the day [who sees these:confused3] while walking behind Cindy's castle, and it was right before leaving on the Magicl Express, so no time for anything but wet towels at Tink's Treasures! :scared1:)

I know I've gotten Splash Mountain in all the nooks and cranies,...does not taste good, but with no ill effects!

no water treatment is guaranteed to be 100% effective. I have no trouble believing that this poster could have gotten an eye infection from treated water. My guess, however is that this was an anomaly.

I would think the water in the attractions is much cleaner than the water around the splash fountains that the toddlers play in - seen too many undiapered little ones playing there to think that water is safe to be in!

I have no doubt it gets filtered every so often. However, last summer, our ds8 rode KRR at AK 6-8 times, then played by the fountains so he was soaked on our way back to the resort. During the bus ride, we noticed a stinky smell (animal feces). Yup, it was ds and his clothes lol. We made him take a quick shower and wash his clothes right away as it was so smelly before we could go to our ADR.

If you see me on one of the water rides, I'll be the one wearing my 'ignorance is bliss' smile...;)

It wouldn't be nearly as bad as the child we saw last week at S Seasons who was on the floor pretending he was a dog, including licking the floor :scared1: The mother was just telling him what a cute doggie he was.

They must treat the ponds and stuff too because all that standing water must look like heaven for mosquitoes.

The part I highlighted - the water that puddles around the fountains is pretty disgusting, since that's where the undiapered little ones play. I'm thinking that's where the odor came from!

I would agree with this as more of a possibility.
