How safe is your stuff...

on Castaway Cay? If I want to go snorkeling with the kids is it safe to leave my tote bag w/ my camera, etc. on the beach?

Disney's island may be magical but my guess is that not all of the guests are equally as magical.

I guess I was wondering too because I read about people saving chairs and hammocks by putting their bags on them.

Good question. I plan on snorkeling with my boys while my DH is fishing.

Are there lockers anywhere on CC?

I remember reading here a while back that a DISer had their stuff stolen off the family beach while they were snorkeling or swimming. We on the other hand, left our bag on the adult beach while we were snorkeling, getting massages, eating, etc. and no one touched it. We had no valuables in there at all, however. (DH bought a "splash caddy" to be able to carry anything of value while in the water.) I wouldn't dare to think that just because you are on DCL that everything is OK to leave out. If it is of true value to you, leave it on board or at home!

We watched our stuff. The only thing of value was the digital camera. I think next time the "old" digital camera will go to the Cay with us. If it gets stolen, we are out the photos and a camera that sits in a drawer currently.

Hi! We have been on 8 DC and have never had any trouble on CC - knock on wood!!

My DH and DD snorkel and I watch the stuff but when we go on our bike rides we take the camera and I have a fanny pack that we keep our wallets in.

When , I go get something to drink while they are snorkeling I just put everything in our bag and put towels on top of the bag. I'm cautious because you can't trust everyone - even though I would like to. Of course, we go to the end of the family beach past the hair braiders and this area usually isn't as busy as right in the middle of everything.

I have never seen lockers at CC - they might be there!

Just be cautious and don't leave things out that might be tempting to people.

Thanks! I think I'll get a disposable waterproof camera for those particular pictures. That way if someone takes our tote all I'm out are a few odds and ends. Unfortunately it's just me and the girls so I don't have anyone to watch the things while we go have fun.

We had our bag stolen which had a camera and one of the video cameras my inlaws had brought with them in it. It also had all of our sunscreen in it, some money, and a few various other things. I imagined that everyone on the cruise was honest....but they are NOT all honest!! We lost precious memories on that day and various other things. My husband lost his wallet including his DL, B/C and about $100.00 in cash. We informed DCL of it thinking that someone grabbed our bag by mistake (after all the beach chairs all look the same) but no one ever turned our stuff in.

I was SO mad! I wouldnt EVER take ANYTHING of value onto CC again!!! If you want to take pictures with a "good camera" or your video camera I'd suggest taking them and then taking them back to your cabin and locking them in the safe!!! I will never ever be dupped into thinking my valuables are safe!!! I also will NEVER EVER go snorkeling on CC without a waterproof container for all of our important stuff like B/C and DL. I had to go back to the ship, get hubby's Passport and bring it back with me so he could get back on the ship at the end of the day!

No way would I trust anything to be left out that we couldnt or wouldnt be able to lose!

So sorry to hear some of you folks have had things taken on Castaway Cay. How horrible!

As I often tell folks at Epcot, never leave anything of value in the strollers or wheelchairs while you're in the attractions. The same holds true for beach chairs at Castaway Cay or any beach you visit while on the cruise.

When something of value might have to be left ungarded, if you can't afford to lose it then don't choose it!

We use water wallets for our KTTW cards and take disposable underwater cameras. Our bag for the day only includes sun sceen, our books, bottled water, and a hat for DH. We leave that as well as a water shoes by our chairs when we snorkel. We've never had anyone mess with out stuff, but I wouldn't want to tempt them with fancy equipment.

The one time DH wanted to take really good shots of the island was a time he brought his good camera but we didn't snorkel on that trip and we were never out of view of the bag.

This is a little unrelated to CC but I have to tell you. Our first day at WDW I was in our room and I took off my engagement ring to put on lotion. I set it on the bed and didn't realize until we were on the bus that I forget it. I was so freaked out that I wanted to get back on the bus to get it. However I didn't want to worry my family ( a group of 15) and I could see that the kids in our group were ready to hit the kingdom. I let it go thinking that I would let karma do it's best for me.

Well when we returned to our room we got a call from the front desk asking us to come down. At this point I actually forgot about the ring having just spent my very first day ever in WDW. The manager came and gave me my ring, it seems that the housekeeper found it and freaked out. She was worried that if something happened to it she would be blamed. I was so excited I waited until she arrived the next day and gave her a HUGH tip. With that said I would opt for buying a disposabale camera before you leave, that way you won't have to worry if it's stolen and you can relax and have fun. Bacause no one can steal memories!

I would think DCL Security could have a very important role here in the recovery of stolen items. If the items stolen are reported promptly, the security screeners could look for the items as folks are screened as they return to the ship. Then those that had the items in their possession could have an extended stay in the Bahamas;) .

We have done 3 DCL cruises and NEVER had a problem. The only thing I have ever heard about being "taken" on CC were those blue "floaties". And I believe some youngsters may have borrowed them. We have left money, cameras etc. while snorkeling, eating, biking etc. AS a matter of fact.......on our sailing Dec. 2002 (replacement Wonder for our cancelled Magic sailing) we recieved an "upgrade" after the sailaway party (after we were totally unpacked) and the room stewards moved EVERYTHING from our port hole stateroom to our new verandah stateroom put everything in exactly the same place and NOTHING came up missing. We always leave cameras, money etc. laying around.

I would encourage you to leave wallets and birth certificates and other items of value on the ship - there just isn't a reason to bring them to the beach. I carried $1 for the post office! (and the usual: suncreen , disposable camera and I used my soda mug to fill with ice and water for free - it is insulated and you can only drink so many konch coolers and still remember your cabin number)

I think it is the most liberating part of the cruise for me - no purse - basically no worries about keys (OK, the cards for the kids but, that is not the same)...just say "charge it!"

Shame on all you thieves! Disney has thier photographers walking around the beach on CC. I summoned one of them to come over and take a few pictures of us. We bought the best ones, and no worries about lugging a camera around! Anyway, I'm a believer in displaying the one great shot that paints a thousand words. ( This also spares my friends and family from looking at 100 photos that are really important ....... to me)

I agree with Barb. If you don't need it, don't bring it. I figure my DH and I will have our KTTW cards and DL in a waterproof container and besides our sunscreen and a camera, that's it. I wouldn't bring my wallet or any cash since we won't need it. Better to be safe than sorry.

We left an expensive digital camera and camcorder while we snorlked at CC. We didn't really think anything of it, it was there when we returned. My husband carried the key to the world cards and Ids in a water wallet.
