How Safe is International Drive at Night?

We used to go to the Old town area of Kissimmee, but we don't feel safe going out at night there anymore. If an older lady pushing a wheelchair keeps their wits about her while walking down International Drive, at night time will she be ok? I'm not talking hanging out there, just walking back from shopping or a restaurant? Is one end of I.drive safer than another?

I think your post # 4 on the thread Recommend an Offsite Hotel

gives more useful information on your requirements .... and your problems about safety .

As a non USA person I have no idea on how to help you . If in Europe , I would say there would be no problem.

South of Sand Lake rd towards the convention center and Sea World is safer than the north end but I don't find any section dangerous, just be alert and cautious, more so in the northern section near the Oak Ridge neighborhood.

International Drive covers a lot of real estate. It's about 17 miles long, according to Bing Maps. There are stretches in the south were there aren't any businesses or other buildings. I wouldn't recommend walking around there...but, it's also unlikely that you're talking about that area.

However, walking between a hotel and a nearby restaurant in the area that Doom1001 mentions should be fine. Tourist areas in cities that survive off of tourist money tend to be well policed. Although it may take slightly longer, walk along the street where there are cars instead of cutting across a parking lot.

We've stayed at various places on International Drive several times. We've never felt threatened mainly because there are always a lot of other people around. I would say to be aware of your surroundings like in any city and never order pizza from anywhere not recommended by your hotel.

I have a friend who works at a restaurant on the south end of I-Drive who said there was a kidnapping near her business, as well as multiple car break-ins at night. I'll occassionally drop by my favorite sushi place on north I-Drive at night but I make a beeline from the door to my car. Since you have your wheelchair you might be seen as an easy target. I don't mean to be alarmist but I'd take advantage of the trolley or taxis.

use to say it was very safe - now not sure - of course it could be the local TV stations making a mountain out of a mouse hill.

use this thing.

sorry does not look like the Orlando police are using it - so go to their site.
