How safe are in-room safes?

I am sure a career criminal could easily "break" in without too much difficulty BUT for most purposes keeping your valuables out of site, you should be fine. The resorts do suggest: For any major valuables, (expensive jewels, etc...) to go to the front desk for an safety deposit box. We usually just carry travelers checks and airline tix, extra credit cards in our room safe, and never had a problem. Some resorts have the very small wall safes and some have a larger model.

Only valuables I would need it for is the travelers checks so I guess the size doesnt matter. I am just so leary of leaving anything in the room and have never used an in-room safe but dont want to carry around all of our travelers checks. Thanks for the info

Never a problem for us. However the safe at CR is HUGE (mounted to the floor in the closest). The wall ones at Pop are pretty large, esp. compared to all of the rest of them.

We ALWAYS store our check book, extra money/travelers checks, jewelry and medications in them. We have never had any problems (well, except my DH leaving stuff in them when we left;))

Floor safes can be a bit too safe sometimes. Most are hardwired to the hotel electrcicity so if there is a storm, fire etc. you can not get back in your safe. We had a very unpleasant experience with that in the Keys when a tornado hit. Now I lock everything in my suitcase. I guess I figure that's just as safe because anyone who knows what they are doing would get into either one just as easily.

What do they do? Give you a combination number or do they have a key for the safes? We are staying at POP if that matters regarding type of safe.

The ones I was referring to have a digital touch pad code you set when you get in your room. If the "key" is a CC type key then the result would be the same if the power goes out.

An easy way to counter this (as long as you are using Disney Transportation) is to leave your vehicle key inside the safe. That way you darn sure aren't leaving without going to the safe first.

The akl safe was small... but plenty large enough for travelers checks and passports. I usually keep my wallet and house keys in there.
