I know that Shrek and Atlantis are PG rated, but for those of you who have seen Shrek, how old should a child be to see it? If you are planning to see Atlantis, what age child(ren) are you taking? Thanks. Pamela

We took our DD and she is 3yrs,5mo. old. It was a great movie, some adult humor, but nothing really inapropiate. It kept her attention the entire time, we all enjoyed it. We will definately take her to see Atlantis as well.

just saw Shrek today with my 3 1/2 DD and 9 DN. I didn't see anything inapropriate. In a couple of scenes the donkey is referred to as an *** (as in "I have to go save my ***"). My niece thought that was pretty funny, and asked if DD knew it could also be a bad word.

I saw Shrek today and there were several adult jokes BUT I want to take my little brother to it (he's 9)--I know he would love it. I went with a group of friends (all of us college seniors) and the girls liked and some of the guys thought it was amusing and others slept through it--this means that the adult humor was not over the top and minimal by most standards today. I loved it--it was cute and clever and had a GREAT ending!

I took my 5-year old DD on Friday. I agree with the other posters that it has mildly offensive language, but not enough to make much of an impression on my DD (still I wish they could just leave it out). I know this movie is getting great reviews, but neither my daughter or I really liked the movie. It was great to look at, but I felt like the movie lacked any magic. (The best jokes went over my daughter's head.)

We are looking forward to Atlantis, and I plan on taking my DD and my 4-year old DS to see it.

BTW, the best "kids" movie we have seen recently was Spy Kids. We all loved it!

My DS (10) and I saw Shrek and loved it. A few of the words could have been left out, but otherwise...we liked it. I do want to take my son to see Atlantis and was thinking about seeing if it may be showing at DD when we are going to be there. (June 29- July 9)

I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond. Looking forward to Atlantis....Pamela

saw this on another board on this site...

www.screenit.com talks about all the movies released, and has a chart on foul language, imitatable behavour, drug/alcohol reference, violence... all these factors, and more were rated low, moderate, high.

And it does say every curse word a movie has... so that was good for us...

No shrek for our 6 and 3 year olds..

DSs are 3 and 5, and it looks like a summer of popcorn and videos at home. Thanks again. Pamela

My daughter is turning 5 Saturday and we just saw it Sunday.

She has seen all the Disney movies and couple others since she's been about 2 1/2. Most keep her attention and she gets what's going on.

I did think it was more geared towards adults. She kept asking me why everyone was laughing.

There was "Damn" and "***" which I didn't like and there were many sexual jokes, but I don't think my daughter even noticed them.

It was very funny just meant for older kids/adults, IMHO.

It did NOT have the "magic" of a Disney movie, that's for sure.

I rarely take my kids to movies - my 5 year old DD has seen A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, The Emperor's New Groove, Thomas and the Magic Railroad and Rugrats in Paris and now Shrek. My 2 and 1/2 year old has seen Thomas and the Magic Railroad and Shrek.

I counted exactly 2 occurences of the word "***" in relation to the donkey, but with inuendo. Don't forget, "***" really is a word for donkey and not considered foul language when used that way. The sexual inuendos were way too subtle to be perceived by young children. And, the violence was all cartoon violence and definitely no worse than Disney violence.

We all (including the 2 and 1/2 year old) loved the movie. It told a beautiful story in a clever way and had a wonderful moral to be learned.

The movie did parody Disney movies in a sarcastic manner. Don't forget it was executive produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg and this was probably his revenge at Disney. While my husband and I thought the jokes aimed at Disney were hysterical, I could see that perhaps some diehard Disney fans (which there are more than a few of on these boards) would dislike or not relate to the movie because of this. There was also some good use of rock music which you may or may not be a fan of. I personally enjoyed it, but I tend to like all music unless extreme.

So you need to decide for yourself whether this is a movie that you or your kids will enjoy. My gut feeling is that most of you will like it. But, then again, with young children we don't get out too much!

Ran into several people that I knew at my small neighborhood theater. Everyone I ran into loved the movie as much as we did.

It depends, too, on what you're worried about-- "Shrek" definitely had more adult humor than a Disney pic (the Gingerbread Boy actually says "eat me!" which went over my 3-yr old's head) but, with the exception of a sequence with a scary dragon, it's pretty light and non-scary. No one loves Disney pics more than me, but we all know that they can be scary as heck and deal with big disturbing stuff, like parents being eaten by leopards or trampled by wildebeests! I worry more about that than a little gross-out humor. Atlantis looks a little intense. We have passes to see it Saturday and I'm a little worried about taking the kid with no pre-screening. Don't get me wrong, she is a tough kid, and scariness and death are part of life, I'm not trying to unreasonably shield her; but like any little one she goes through weird phases and I don't want to spend the next week talking her out of nightmares!

Hi,
I took my 4 year old son to see Shrek the other day and he loved it! I bought him the soundtrack today and he wants to listen to it over and over. He also saw the trailer for Atlantis and keeps begging me to take him to see it.

We just saw Shrek with our DDs 8.5 and 5 and I think my husband and I laughed harder than either one of the girls although my 8 yr old got a lot more of the jokes than the little one and she loved it too. The 5 yr old liked it but I know most of the jokes and references went right over her head - I probably wouldn't take her again but I don't think it hurt her at all. I on the other hand would definitely see it again - Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers are hilarious!:jester:

We took our 7 and 9 yr. olds, and we all liked it. The language was fairly mild, and there was some mild "gross-out" humor, like burping, etc. At one point, some skeletons are seen of people that have been burned up by the dragon (including bones sticking up out of some boots). About the same level as the Evil Queen in Snow White kicking the skeleton and screaming "Thirsty! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!" Many Disney animated movies are much more disturbing in tone (such as Bambi, Fox and the Hound, etc.).
