How old is too old for a flower girl?

Just wondering what others think.

Pezalicious, it doesn't matter what we think -- it's what you think. I say this because it wasn't too long ago when society dictated that only "virgins" could wear "white" to their weddings. Believe me, I wouldn't have worn white to my original wedding had I done what society dictated. ;)

Here is something that I found on the 'net just now. It's some nice advice and might help you reach a decision:

If you are faced with the dilemma of a young lady who is too old to be a flower girl, consider asking her if she might instead prefer to be a junior bridesmaid. There is no hard and fast rule for a cutoff age. Again, it depends on the girl. If she is really comfortable being a flower girl, you have your answer. If she thinks that being a flower girl is too babyish, then consider asking her to do something else. Know the disposition of the child you choose and make your decision based on that information.

I'm not really worried about what others think at all. If I want something, I'll pretty much go for it, others be darned (unless their enjoyment of something will be compromised)! However, my concern is more about whether or not I would insult my niece, who will be almost 11 when I get married. I have almost no experience when it comes to weddings as I've only been to 3. The first I can't remember, the second was completely unconventional, and for the third I was an emotional wreck because it was the first time I had to see my dad after many years of choosing to not have him in my life. I'm pretty clueless when I think of my own wedding. I actually prefer being clueless in some ways, as whatever I choose will be even more 'me', but with things like this, I just don't know.

Also, since I want a really tiny wedding, I'm not sure I'll have a bridesmaid, which would knock out that idea (though it is a really good one, thank you!).

I'm just so glad I have lots of time to figure everything out.

Edit: Now I'm thinking 11 is definitely too old and she'd feel like I'm treating her like a little kid. Darn!

My 10 yo neice was our FG. We asked if she wanted to be a jr. BM instead but she said, No! She wanted one last oppertunity to be a FG. After all, she had perfected the job over her lifetime ;)

10 or 11 would probably be my cut-off, although I agree that it should be up to the child :) I remember being 9 or 10 and being told I was too old. My sister and my three cousins got to wear pretty dresses and walk down the aisle and I sat with my parents and watched. :(

My sister was the flowergirl at my wedding almost 20 years ago now. She was 10 at the time. She did however wear a dress just like the bridesmaids...I guess you could say she was the Jr. Bridesmaid/flowergirl. She enjoyed being involved in the process. See what happens when your big sister loves you...I'm taking her to Disney for her first visit this week! We leave Thursday, I'm so excited. Her daughter, who will be 2 at the time, will be the flowergirl at my VR next Thanksgiving!

Our flowergirl will be 8 years old at the time of the wedding. I asked her mom in advance what she thought her daughter would prefer to be called.

My flower girl was 5 and wore a store bought dress. Looked great.
My Jr. Bridesmaid was 9 and wore the same dress as my bridesmaids and she was paired up with her 11 yo brother.
It really is up to you.

I had 2 flower girls- one my cousin and the other DH's niece they were both 11 at the time, they had a blast together being flower girls. They just wore the older type (Jr. Bridesmaids) dresses, they were on :cloud9: all day.

I agree that it should be left up to the girl to decide what she wants to be. 11 is that age when your not a little girl, but still not a teen. I work at David's Bridal and I have see a lot of temper tantrums from tweens who thought they were to old to be a flower girl, while others loved the idea.

My flower girl was six....I have seen older though. Ask the young lady or her mother to see what she would be more comfortable as.

Whew, I'm glad to here that most people think that 10 or 11 would be the cut off age depending on the child. My neice will be 7, nearly 8. But she's a tall, grown-up 7 and I was worried that she would look odd trying to be passed off as a flower girl.

My sister and niece are flying out to AZ (from MI) to visit my mom for thanksgiving. So my mom is going to take my niece dress shopping and get her something 'off the rack'. I'm confindent in my mom's taste and I know she gets the whole theme and idea of the wedding. So, that's one less thing for me to worry about!

Okay, I'm the different one. My flower girl will be 12 or 13 at the time of the wedding. She will kinda be like a jr. BM. She wants to be a flower girl though. I gave her the option of being a pure jr. BM, but nope! She's determined to be the flower girl!! And my ring bearer will be 17!! Yes, I'm different. The reasoning behind this is a little weird.

1- there are no young children in my immediate family, and I do not want some distant cousin's twice removed child that I've never seen in my wedding.

2-I really don't want children in the wedding at all as they tend to be a little wild.

I know this may sound bratty, but I'm really not meaning to be!!

Like said before, it all depends on you the bride:bride: to make the decision, after all, it is our day!:goodvibes

Our flower girl is 5 and tooo cute :) We got her dress at Davids Bridal - it's a mini version of mine!

I think 10 is probably the oldest I'd want my flower girl to be..any older I think I'd ask them to be jr. bm's. But it's entirley up to you and your flower girl to be!! :)
