how often is it acceptable to call?

I have often wondered how the waitlist works. It seems to me that there must be a frequency (for example, daily) at which the reservation system is sort of "swept" for cancellations to match up to the waitlist. You might think that this should be done very frequently, so that waitlists are matched up with cancellations before new callers could get them, but then multiple-day waitlists would be less likely to be filled. (So if it's done hourly, and I am waitlisted for a Monday and a Tuesday, unless both become available in the same hour, they won't come to me, they'll go to other people who waitlisted only one of those days.) Does that seem to be the way it works? If so, the less frequently they do it, the better for multi-day reservations, but also the better for people who call a lot to check.

It seems that is the way it works. When I first looked at the idea of waitlist I assumed it looked at the list before releasing rooms to call ins. You may be right in the fact that if it can not fill an entire request then you are passed over. Who knows but I am definitely going to call each day to see if I can fill my waitlist even if it one day at a time. It would be nice if the member was given the option of if you were willing to fill the waitlist days as they come available or waiting on the entire thing.

Actually...It would be nice of they explained exactly how the system does it in the member literature and website.

Then again, sometimes too much knowledge can result in people determining how to abuse a system.

So true.....I am learning that many things are not explained anywhere except here on the boards.:sad2:

They used to allow this. Probably the new software won't do it. But you can do it yourself.

I had excellent luck with the waitlist for a THV this fall. I got the weekend dates I wanted (with DP's which couldn't be waitlisted), but wanted 3 weeknights before that. I used my two waitlist requests like this: I waitlisted the 3 weeknights as one, and then separately, I waitlisted the Thursday night, thinking that if only one day came through, I'd only have to move once. Then when that came through, I planned to waitlist the Wednesday night, and so on. As it turned out, all of my waitlists came through on the same day (must have been new inventory declared). Then I decided to come a day early, so I waitlisted the Monday. It came through later the same day! (I didn't find that out until the next week.) So the upshot of all this is, I think the day-by-day method is much more likely to work.

I was calling about once every 10 days or so to check on my son's waitlist. I was just a little disappointed that a certain view in a dvc resort is also considered one waitlist.

I also checked at least twice a day on-line. I was pretty busy the last few days and had not checked one day on-line, checked the next evening and his new reservation was on the website - 7 days before checking in. He will be there Wed.

We almost never call to check on a wait list. We've not found it to be necessary as our wait list requests come through about 90% of the time. So we don't waste time with calling.

I agree I do NOT call to check on wait lists and have to date 100% success with them. I do stand by my previous comment about calling daily if you are out of waitlists and trying to get a ressie.

I'm on a waitlist and am now wondering if I should be calling also. I remember reading that they fill the waiting lists at the end of the day. If this is true, won't people who call everyday get the room and those of us on the waiting list wait forever? Or at least be the last in line.

Don't know where you read that, but I seriously doubt that's the case. I'm thinking that wait lists are cleared throughout the day as time permits.

this is going to seem quite silly: how do you check resort availability online? the standard way of requesting a reservation and then seeing if it is available?

My father is the owner of the membership, which sort of explains why I dont know everything...and neither does he lol.

You cant check availability, but if you have a reservation and a waitlist, once the wait list comes through the reservation will be updated online.

On this web site, under "DVC - Resort Reservation Availability", you can see dates where people self-report room types/locations that were not available. It's not perfect, but can give you someplace to start.
