How often has your room been dirty at check in?

How often has your room been unclean when you first got into it?

  • 90-100% of the time it was dirty

  • 60-90% of the time it was dirty

  • 10-60% of the time it was dirty

  • 1-10% of the time it was dirty

  • 0%...it has always been clean

Thanks for the poll, Granny.

While I agree that a majority of the posters have responded in a very positive manner (107 out of 146 responses indicate absolutely ZERO problems with cleanliness :) ), however your poll also shows that 26.7% (39/146) of the members responding have, at one time or another, had some sort of cleanliness issue. And IMHO, that's not so great :(

That said, when we make our first "official" trip home to OKW in February, I don't anticipate any problems with our villa! I do expect that the villa will be clean. Housekeeping is a big part of the dues budget and I expect nothing less than a spotless unit when we arrive. If it's not, I will make a polite phone call and then go visit the parks so that housekeeping can rectify the situation :)

I just don't understand the people who will scrub, wash and vacuum their villas if they find them dirty!

Of the many DVC stays we had, this last trip to VWL is probably the only one where I can honestly say housekeeping did a great job. Not that the rooms from the other trips were terrible, but without being overly critical or looking extra hard, there were very obvious signs of a lackendasical effort by housekeeping.

We are new to dvc, but have already stayed 3 times in BCV's. The rooms have always been very clean and hopefully will continue to be so.:D

Thanks Granny for bringing this back to life. I was hoping that there was some kind of poll out there for this topic.

It amazes me every time I read a report about a dirty room...our rooms have always been very clean....

This poll is definately illustrating that it is the squeaky wheel that everybody hears....

75% of the DVCers report always having a clean room
18% of the DVCers report a dirty room 1 -10% of the time
5% of the DVCers report a dirty room 10-60% of the time
2% of the DVCers report a dirty room 60-90% of the time
2% of the DVCers report a dirty room 90-100% of the time

Looks to me like the housekeeping staff does a really good job..

6 trips. Only last time at Vero Beach did we get both a late check in and an unacceptable room in terms of cleanliness.

Another thought....

I run my own cleaning service and I can guarantee that EVERY DVCers opinion of clean and dirty will vary.....While some will be upset by something that will be very minor to someone else.....so, 25% doesnt' sound bad too me...realizing that the spectrum these complaints can range...

I stayed at BWV on my first trip home last week. I was a little apprehensive after reading the housekeeping comments here. Well, I was in three different rooms, and they were all clean! I feel much better now.

I've been in a studio at OKW, VB and BWV as well as a 1-bedroom twice at BWV and have never had a problem. I've always found ithe rooms to be quite clean.

Looking forward to a clean studio in BWV for NYE!

That's true, but statistics go both ways -- in other words, within that large group of "0" complaints, there are some folks with very LOW standards, who will see no flaw where Joe Average would infact have found complaint (and where the very fussy would have been horrified). The percentage of those finding no fault in the rooms is therefore equally "skewed". Somewhere in the middle probably lies the reality.

THere is also a delicate balance here, with check out at 11 and check in at 4 pm (well, now, it's on demand, so it's even tougher as folks want those rooms now, now, now!) A 2BR is pretty huge... if you have to vacuum, wash all counters, wipe down the bath, treat for mold, scrub the grout, get the hair, clean the windows, scavenge for lost loot/toys/earrings/etc., and spackle/repair/etc any flaws, vacuum the seat cushions, wipe all the mirrors, etc.... in short, clean it the way you would clean your home, or even better, -- and then REPEAT this process for all the other rooms that folks are vacating... I'd be willing to bet that on a heavy move-in / move out day, it could get crazy! And let's not forget too that some folks aren't very clean-living (i.e. there are some slobs out there that abuse the rooms...) Those can't be easy clean-ups. And do they really change the bedspreads? This is a gross topic, but I was under the impression that very few hotels change out the top cover -- just the sheets under them.

I'm not excusing dirty conditions or poor housekeeping, but I do think perspective has to be balanced in all directions. My dh would never have spotted some of the small things I've noticed, yet I'd be willing to wager his mom could have spotted every one of these and then 15 more in any room we've ever had. It does seem that where given a chance, Disney's philosophy is to just make the problem go away at that minute, for that guest -- but by making the problem "disappear", they may not be making any dents long-term at the root of the problem. If there is a statistically-provable issue with housekeeping, they may need to rethink how they manage it altogether to really make any sort of change. And that could be costly (either in the time required -- meaning earlier check out, later check-in) or money (i.e. dues -- paying HK more to get more).

(Food for thought... but keep it tidy & try not to make any crumbs...)

I don't buy that logic at all. The larger your sample size, the more accurate the results will be in any polling mechanism. You cannot arbitrarily assume that a large number of respondants giving identical replies indicates the poll itself is flawed.

This poll DOES represent the feelings of Average Joe, with standards likely to vary all across the spectrum. To use your words, there are certainly people with Low standards and people with High standards included throughout this poll. Frankly it's a bit presumptous of you to assume that this poll has a 25% margin for error due to the "LOW standards" of over 50 people that responded.

What one CAN do with this poll is realize that it represents the feelings of the Average Joe, and adjust individual expectations accordingly. If YOU feel that you are more particular than most people, then there is a greater likelihood that you will be disappointed in your room.

I wasn't able to cast a vote on your poll, but, in all my trips only once has it been "dirty".

Good poll!!! I get tired seeing posts from people that do nothing but complain about things that are wrong. If the complaint police check their homes, I wonder how many they would find? We may have have a few minor things, but housekwwping and maintenance have always been extremely good and prompt, and for the most part, things have been ****-and-span. Wish my home were the same. I have little nicks and dents here and there, my drains occasionally get plugged, I get occasional ants, spiders and other assorted bugs, strange smells and whatever. Wish I could call housekeeping to take care of them.

These boards are great!

Now I have to make sure DW doesn't read this post.

Seriously, our room was fine. When we stepped in the room, DW knew immediately that the previous guests had a diaper age child.... she said the room had "the smell". Oh well, at least she didn't blame me.

We did spot a few pieces of dried cereal on the carpet, near the walls, as if Mousekeeping had shortcutted the vacuuming. But the room was very acceptable.

I was one of the "0%" voters and I definately don't have low standards, but I am not going to call an entire room "dirty" just because of one thing wrong. For example, the aforementioned cereal near the walls. I think that is easy to miss - even for the best of housekeepers. That would not make me say the room was dirty, it would make me say that 99.9% of the room was clean.

Now, if this poll asked - would you say that 100% of the room was clean, 99-99.9% was clean, 98-98.9% was clean and in 1% increments down to say 90 and then in 5% and then to 10%, maybe there would be a different result.

If the tub wasn't cleaned, I wouldn't consider that to be a dirty room - a serious oversight yes!!!!! But if the other 97% of the room was clean, why call the whole room dirty? Just like the apple I found in a refrigerator was a slight oversight, but if that's the only thing then the room was over 99% clean in my book.

One apple does not a greater than 0% poll answer make for me.

Now now -- don't go gettin yer mouse ears in a bunch. Recall that I wrote in response to a prior comment that implied that those who always find flaw with housekeeping could very likely be very very picky people. If you make THAT assumption (which BTW I don't "assume" anything... data is its own answer, IF it is correctly taken) -- then you would have to make the similar argument that people at the other end (in the "no problems ever" zone) might be inordinately unparticular. It's incomplete logic to assume that the is error on only one end of the study. And 25% flaw margin is YOUR number, not mine -- I never said how many "non-particulars" would be in that group, only that the actual percentage might shift if you were to discount them. Bottom line, I was making the point that you can't eliminate data at will -- you have to look at the entire data pool -- unless you can qtest a flier outta there or have just cause to disqualify, that puppy stays.

We have no real metric for "average joe", so a poll like this takes average joe, picky joe, and slob joe and lumps them together kit, cat, and kaboodle. "Average" is an undefined, subjective term, so the poll then reflects the average experience of all those groups together. You would almost need a defining questionaire, asking what things would freak you out, and to what extent (mold, dings, crumbs, unmade beds, sticky floors, dirty dish, etc.) Not sure that view is worth the climb.

2000 trip to VB: room was clean, but showed alot of wear and tear. Carpet was really worn and frayed. I think we were there just before the rooms were refurbished.

2001 trip to BWV: room was clean. Can't remember any issues.

2002 trip to VWL: room cleanliness was just okay, not quite up to standards. There was quite a bit of dust close to the wall around the baseboards like it hadn't been cleaned in quite a while. Other than that it was okay. Before the end of our weeklong stay in a studio, the bathroom floor needed to be swept, but there wasn't a broom in the room. Asked the CM if the room should have a broom and she said no. I told her the floor was dirty and needed to be swept and received no reply. Next time I will bring a small broom/dustpan in my suitcase.

Next trip is to BCV in May, 2003.

I remember reading several posts in the past from people who walked into rooms and mousekeeping was sitting down watching TV and eating snacks. Wonder if this is becoming an issue. I remember when Disney was acknowledged by everyone for their quality control standards. Companies around the world tried to emulate them. Did they lower their standards...is good help getting that hard to find...or what???
