How often do you stay at your home resort?

We mostly stay at one of our home resorts. That may have to do with the fact that once I book, I never care to change a reservation. Most times I make reservations it is more than 7 months out so the only choice is a home resort.

On the occaisions where I plan less than 7 months out I try another resort. I just put my dates in the online system and see what is available and go for it.

Pretty much what we do. We own OKW, but usually can get BCV, SSR, or BWV at the 7 month booking window. :)
Although it is getting harder to book BCV, BWV during F&WF days. :faint:

Let's see, there are a few ways I could answer this...

1) NEVER. We bought points at SSR last year, and haven't had the chance to use them ourselves at any resort yet. But that probably isn't what you're getting at.

2) ALWAYS. We only have one tripped planned, and that is at our home resort. But I'm not sure that really captures the spirit of the question either.

3) About 15% of the time. This is what I expect, at this point, will be our long-term home resort use. And the reason is simple: we want to try all the resorts. One of the appealing things about DVC was the ability to use points at multiple resorts, and almost all of them have something compelling about them that makes us want to stay there. Maybe we will change our minds, or maybe at some point will pick a few favorites and rotate through those. But for the next 15 years or so, I expect to rotate through them all.

Maybe 75% of the time we stay at our home, OKW. This fall we have stays booked at OKW & BLT. When we owned at VWL, for 10 years, we only stayed there 4 times total.

Am I reading right that you can book your home resort at 11 months, but then at the 7-month mark, swap it for another resort that is open? Any penalty or cost to do this?

Of course you can do that! There is no penalty. The points you used to book at your home resort will be used to book at the other resort 7 months out

For longer trips we usually stay at our home resort to stretch points with a value room.

Every time. I really like SSR and I'm too lazy and hate the stress of wait listing at the other resorts.

We stay at our home resort 50% of the time. SSR. Every wait list I have ever tried for came through. We don't travel at crazy high demand times.

If you know when you're going, it's a good idea to book your home resort 11 months out, so you're guaranteed a place to stay. Then at 7 months, if you want, you can try for a different resort. There is no cost, EXCEPT:
If your home resort requires fewer points than the 7 month resort, more points will come out of your account.
If your home resort requires more points than the 7 month resort, the points will be returned you.
However, if in that case, you borrowed points, the borrowed points will remain in the use year they were borrowed to use. So if you borrowed 2015 points to use in your 2014 UY, the returned points will have an expiration the same as 2014 UY points.

We only stay at BLT when we are in WDW I see no reason to stay anywhere else (even though I also love Boardwalk). We have also used our membership however to stay at Vero Beach which I am happy because that is a hidden gem, as well as Grand Californian which is super hard to get into at the 9 month mark.

Our home resorts are SSR (2/3 of our points) and AKV. We rarely stay at SSR -- though we did like our stay at a Treehouse when we had a bigger group with us. We love AKV and stay there sometimes, but with a toddler now, we prefer being close to a park these days, especially MK. We've had a lot of luck getting BLT/VGF/BWV/BCV/VWL.

We love our home resort, HH, and go there 66% of the time. We usually use our DVC once a year. We go to HH 2 years in a row and then a trip to WDW trying the different resorts. I feel this keeps WDW a little more magical by going every 3rd year.

Although this year we did SSR and are going back to OKW with friends for Spring Break. We have been members since 99 and I have not had a problem booking any resort as long as we do it at the 7 month window. We usually go during Spring Break, Easter or Holiday Seasons. If you wait until 6 to 5 months out rooms really seem to be hard to get.

We own most of our points at HH and some at VB. Since 1999, we have only stayed at HH 2 nights (after a Disney cruise in January to break up the drive home) and have never been to VB!! :rolleyes1
